Today gun violence shook Virginia Beach. My city experienced a shooting that left 11 innocent victims and the shooter dead. Currently there are 6 more victims in critical condition. This is NOT something ever thought to happen in Virginia Beach.
I grew up in the inner city of Cleveland, Ohio and North Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. So gun violence is not foreign to me. But Virginia Beach is not Cleveland or Philadelphia. It is city with little gun violence.
My condolences go out to the families of the 11 innocent people who died today. My heart goes out to the injuried victims and their families. And I know many of the people who work at the Virginia Beach Municipal Center will need help coping with this incident.
I have a lot of respect for the first responders who ran into the shooting area to help the victims and apprehend the shooter.
The shooting occurred in a building in the city’s municipal center, right behind the main police station. Workers near the shooting scene were told to shelter in place. Interviewed people were visibly shaken, including a reporter who was on the scene for a court case. Let us hope this is the last time Virginia Beach has to experience this type of gun violence.
I am running for Virginia State Senate District 7 to ensure we continue to have enough first responders with the proper training to respond incidents like this.

There are now 12 deceased victims and one dead suspect. The count of critically injured is still being researched, because some victims self-transported themselves to the hospital located about 2 miles from the Municipal Center.
