I’m not going to say a lot about this, because really, what can I say? I just wanted to post it so the word gets out. It’s a piece from Marie Claire that I happened to see online that made me in turn heartsick and angry. Women of all backgrounds have had to shout louder and louder to be heard. And many of us are being heard, even though we’re often still ignored. But Native American women have been struggling merely to be noticed at all. We have few Native American media personalities, for example, and most of the images we do have are stereotypes from white American movies and history books. Just look at the consequences of what we’ve done. A whole people are collateral damage, not only from our historical actions and our revisionist popular cultural history, but our present ignorance and indifference. And of course, whenever any group of people is damaged, who gets hurt the most? The women.
What can be done?
