The moldy Denialist lie of the week is that electric cars have no future because charging. We knew better years ago. "As more EVs hit our streets, when will people start getting 'gas anxiety?'" Gas stations will go away along with gas guzzlers.
ArsTechnica, 2016: Why the Tesla Model 3 and Chevy Bolt are going to kill the gas station
Tesla has its own national charging network. As part of the Community Service provisions of the VW Dieselgate settlement, VW will spend $2 billion promoting EVs. Some will go to awareness of EVs through TV and other advertising. Much more will be invested in expanding the US charging network for cars from all manufacturers, and interlinking charging networks across the country.
The PlugShare map at the top of this Diary gives you something of an idea of current charger coverage in North America. It is not true that Dallas TX or LA has no chargers. PlugShare has some algorithm for which chargers it shows where and which it omits in any particular view, depending in part on where the user has recently zoomed in.
BTW, there may be about 168,000 gas stations in the US. Or maybe only 115,000. Counts vary considerably.
Number of public electric vehicle charging stations and charging outlets in the U.S. as of December 2018 (in units)
In 2018, the U.S. had approximately 57,000 charging outlets [at] 20,000 charging stations for plug-in electric vehicles (EVs). A considerable sum of these chargers is found in California, with some 4,800 stations and 18,200 power outlets. Plug-in power stations and charging outlets have helped the U.S. plug-in electric vehicle sales rise from 115,000 in 2015 to 358,000 in 2018.
Stop Comparing The Number Of Gas Stations To EV Charging Stations
Residential (Home) Charging is Where a Significant Percentage of Charging Will Occur.
With the current stock of EVs in the US, there are then actually 14 times more charging stations per EV than available gas pumps per all autos.
EV charging stations will be co-located with businesses looking to attract customers with 15 minutes to 2 hours (or overnight) of available dwell time.

Electrify America unveils map of planned charging stations for its massive network
The VW-funded part of this network is supposed to cover all major cities, and provide charging stations at most 70 miles apart on the major highways that it covers.
Electric car charging in America just got a little bit easier
ChargePoint and Electrify America electric car chargers will be interoperable.
Electrify America will deploy 2,000 350kW fast chargers by the end of 2019
484 new charging sites, split between 17 metro areas and highways in 39 states.
Charging an electric car in America is about to get a little less painful
ChargePoint and Electrify America have reached an agreement that aims to make it easier for drivers of electric vehicles to switch between EV charging networks.
The “roaming” partnership announced Tuesday will allow drivers to access public chargers on either the ChargePoint or Electrify America networks without having to create new memberships, registrations or payment configurations.
The plan, which begins later this year, will connect more than 30,000 Level 2 and DC fast chargers from Electrify America and ChargePoint across the United States. Electrify America, the entity set up by Volkswagen as part of its settlement with U.S. regulators over its diesel emissions cheating scandal, has said it will invest $2 billion over 10 years in clean energy infrastructure and education. The VW unit expects to have 484 electric vehicle charging stations with more than 2,000 charging dispensers installed or under construction by July 1.
Like how you can use an ATM from any bank, right?
VW’s Electrify America opens California’s first 350kW ultra-fast charger, before cars can actually use it
Some announced cars, namely the Porsche Taycan (and the Audi e-tron GT based on the same platform), will have this capability.
At 350kW [and 800 volts], a large EV battery in the 75-100kWh range could fill to 80% in about 10-15 minutes.
More Community Service.
And another Denialist lie bites the dust.
Charging standards in common use are
- Level 1 Standard US household outlet, 120 VAC
- Level 2 240 VAC
- Level 3 480 VDC
and
Of course, there is more to the story than just cars. We will come back to that on another Friday.
