Saturday was the first Pride Day event held in Harford County, Maryland. Right here in little Havre de Grace. A real honest to God family celebration of those members who are perhaps a little different. The Mayor and most of the town Council opened the heavily sponsored event. Beforehand naysayers were pretty much swamped on the local Facebook pages. Most of the churches had booths giving out free water and other refreshments. Local businesses set up booths simply to show their support. The Hushdown music group played two sessions on the stage and there were two rounds of Drag Queen performances.
There was a lot for the kids to do – although when the Drag Queens were performing, most of them were right there. As with a lot of events in the town, the kids were front and center. I don’t believe I’ve ever seen so many people here enjoy themselves so much. The six foot plus drag queen doing the story time reading to the kids was simply precious. There were, as always, the food trucks off to the side. And in Havre de Grace there’s never a worry about bathrooms – the town provides public bathrooms within walking distance of everything.
I do a lot of B&W photography in the town – the address of my Blog is on my profile page – so I took a lot of pictures, including the one here.
One pitiful stream of protesters walked through with placards bearing Old Testament quotes, as if that has a darn thing to do with Christianity. They had to feel pretty silly because they were simply ignored as everyone continued to have a good time. Next year – I think they’re gonna need a bigger park. Again, I’m so damn proud.
