The crisis our country is having at our border is something we have created, and something exacerbated by the current Republican administration. While progressive activists and politicians have called out the truly horrific nature of our current policies and practices of detaining children and families in sub-human conditions, Republican proponents have spent most of their worthless hot breaths on attempting to sow divisions while revising history to support their fascistic impulses. Wayfair Inc. is an e-commerce company that sells home goods, like furnishing and decorations. Over 500 employees have reportedly signed a letter voicing demands that the company stop doing business with contractors who were furnishing the U.S. border concentration camps. The two asks in the letter:
- Cease all current and future business with BCFS and other contractors participating in the operation of migrant detention camps at our Southern border (or any other location)
- Establish a code of ethics for B2B Sales that empowers Wayfair and its employees to act in accordance with our core values.
The organized workers have also planned a walkout from the company’s Boston, Massachusetts, offices on Wednesday.
Bloomberg reports that while Wayfair was unwilling to verify the authenticity of correspondence put out on Twitter, an internal memo is said to show Wayfair telling employees that they would complete the work they were contracted to do, as “it is a standard practice to fulfill orders for all customers and we believe it is our business to sell to any customer who is acting within the laws of the countries within which we operate.” According to #Wayfairwalkout, this would result in about $86,000 from sales. What a weak price for your soul.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who has been very open about how unacceptable our current immigration policies and ICE enforcement practices are, boosted the Wayfair workers’ signal.
Here at Daily Kos, we act on news and organize around news. We do this because it is the entire point of the gift of cognition and humanity.
This morning we asked our email list to contribute to organizations advocating and organizing for immigrant communities. So far, we have raised $99,000!
The work these organizations are doing is vital. Please support their efforts by helping us raise $125,000. Click here to donate today.
