I’m surprised at not seeing this already diaried here, by the end of Saturday. I don’t like writing over-simplified drafts, and I dislike even more bringing attention to anything Trump said or wrote, but the linked diary was on HuffPo today, and it doesn’t appear to have been covered here… and it’s worth a look.
Very briefly, it discusses a press conference Trump had in Osaka on this current G20-focused trip to the East… In that presser, Trump was asked about two things he completely misunderstood and was in total ignorance of — not the events — but in the basic political concepts employed in those stories… concepts the questioners at the pressers obviously ASSUMED he was conversant with, and for which he expressed basic ignorance of those concepts.
Someone asked him about the Harris-Biden flap that was all over the news all day Friday. The point of the flap discussed the Supreme Court’s authorization of school-busing of students starting in the 60s to enforce Supreme Court-ordered school desegregation, which became a national and incredibly divisive issue at that time. Trump was around then, but I guess he was too busy becoming an asshole. His answer clearly indicated that he was unaware of the fact that school bussing to enforce school integration had happened.
Secondly, someone asked him about Putin’s comment that “Western liberalism had become obsolete.” Trump responded as though Putin’s comment was directed against political liberalism in the U.S. and something on the order of “those liberals in California may have to be dealt with,” etc., etc. . . . as opposed to “Western liberal ideals” that Putin was obviously referring to such as freedom of speech, free elections, etc., that Russia has often criticized. A couple of other European G20 travelers came out specifically with understanding what Putin was saying and voiced their opposition to his comments. Trump didn’t even understand what Putin was inferring.
Reporters characterized his answers as “bizarre” and as evidence that he had no idea what the questioners were talking about; one used the term “cognitive decline.”
I would normally go back and re-write this, and it doesn’t do the idiocy of Trump’s responses justice, but it’g getting late, and I wanted to get this on the diary list before any more time expired.
