WRAL By Julian Grace, WRAL anchor/reporter
Groups gathered around the Triangle and across the state Friday for "Lights for Liberty" vigils.
The events were organized in places all around the Triangle, state and world in an effort to stand in solidarity against what organizers call inhumane conditions at the U.S. border.
There were no counter protestors, just a large crowd, all with the same focus.
They wanted to be heard and they came in bunches, carrying signs, candles and portraits.
Collectively they raised their voices, and then they raised their candles in silence, as the names of children who died in detention centers were read.
"I hope it gets the message to the White House and reps ... very disgraced. The Republicans are disgraceful and that's how I feel," said one protestor.
They called for an end to detention centers, protections for the migrant community and no raids come this weekend.
"I'm actually really worried," said another protestor. "I made a post at WRAL ... I'm afraid for everybody who is an undocumented immigrant. If I could give somebody shelter I would."
The group stood and listened to speaker after speaker, hoping they will be heard pass the intersection of Jones and Wilmington.
Some people made it clear they are willing to shelter undocumented workers this weekend to keep them from being separated from their families.
Thanks again!
