Here’s some simple messaging that everyone opposed to Trump and his policies should be using:
It’s racist, and it’s unAmerican.
It’s misogynistic, and it’s unAmerican
It’s homophobic, and it’s unAmerican
It’s cruel, and it’s unAmerican
It’s unconstitutional, and it’s unAmerican
It’s stupid, and it’s unAmerican
It’s (fill in the blanks) and it’s unAmerican.
You might be a racist, or a misogynist, you might be homophobic, you might even be stupid, but in your heart of hearts, no matter who you are, you think you are an American.
Constantly reminding people that what Trump and his Republican enablers are doing is unAmerican does two things:
1) It reminds people what American values really are.
2) It forces people to deal with the fact that Trump and Republicans are behaving in ways that are unAmerican.
When Trump says that the Squad should go back to where they’re from, he’s accusing them of being unAmerican. Two can play at that game. Our side has the benefit of being in the right. It’s a powerful trope. We should use it.
I wish the Squad had used this message at their press conference. We’d be talking about it today. And the pundits would be asking the question, “is it unAmerican?” And Trump, of course, would be seething. Unable to help himself, he’d tweet out some other unAmerican bunk and we could call him on that too: it’s unAmerican.
