For the last two weeks, protesters have gathered in Puerto Rico in efforts to get Governor Ricardo Rosselló to resign. Between nearly 900 pages of chat messages (including insults against women, homophobia, and mocking victims of Hurricane Maria), a $15.5 million scandal involving the FBI, fraud, two of his former senior officials, and a long-building sentiment that he isn’t best-serving people on the island, it’s probably no surprise that people have taken to the streets. It’s historic, though; while people have (of course) always protested in Puerto Rico, the tens of thousands right now make up the island’s biggest protest in two decades, according to the Associated Press.
The latest update: Rosselló isn’t stepping down. He posted a video to Facebook saying he’ll resist the impeachment process if it’s brought against him. He’s said he won’t seek reelection next year. Protesters don’t think this is enough (note: it isn’t enough), and by Monday afternoon, already blocked the American Expressway (a major highway). Even cruise ships canceled regularly scheduled stops, a big deal for an island where tourism is an important industry.
