Announced by tweet, Trump has now given his own endorsement to the deal hammered out between Democrats and administration officials for a two-year budget and extension to the debt ceiling. Trump's tweet also claimed Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy are on board. (It is not immediately clear whether they themselves know that.)
As reported earlier, the deal would boost spending by $320 billion and would permanently end the so-called "sequester" rules, demanded by Republicans in 2011, mandating steep cuts across government when lawmakers are unable to pass a budget. It would also kick the debt ceiling can down the road into the next president's term, no doubt setting up a future crisis but providing current lawmakers an escape from yet another potential (election-year) government shutdown.
Democratic leaders are endorsing the deal as well, noting in a statement: "We are pleased that the Administration has finally agreed to join Democrats in ending" the "devastating cuts" of the sequester.
