I’ve conducted a few polls here in the past:
I know such polls aren’t scientific; however, if they manage to get a decent number of votes (say, a few hundred), I think that might be a large enough sample to give us some insight into the subset of Kossacks who tend to both read and participate in the side page diaries — which is a relatively small number compared to the Daily Kos readership in general.
How small? I don’t know, but I think one way to gauge it would be by the number of Recommendations that we see on highly popular, noncontroversial diaries. What’s the largest number of recs you’ve seen?
My favorite hypothetical example: imagine that Michelle Obama donated a kidney to a stranger, and a popular user here posted a diary about it on the side page. Michelle Obama is virtually universally admired on our side of the aisle, and such an act of generosity would be virtually universally applauded. I would guess — based on what I’ve seen in the past — that even on a high-traffic day, such a diary would collect no more than 1000 to 1500 recs. And this makes me reckon that we don’t have tens of thousands of folks actively engaging in the side page diaries, but more likely in the very low thousands.
Thanks for participating in this poll!
Please note: in this poll, I’m interested in how Kossacks would describe themselves, so I’m purposely not defining “working class.” (As far as “white” or “nonwhite,” pick the description that you think would fit you best in U.S. Census reports.)
