Several weeks ago, Lights for Liberty began organizing a vigil to end concentration camps in the United States.
On Friday July 12th, 2019, Lights for Liberty: A Vigil to End Human Concentration Camps, will bring thousands of people to locations worldwide as well as to concentration camps across the country, into the streets and into their own front yards, to protest the inhumane conditions faced by migrants.
Initially planned as a nationwide vigil, Lights for Liberty already has 544 events scheduled not only in all 50 states, but also in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Mexico, The Netherlands, Senegal, Spain, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom, so far. Peace Corps volunteers are also hosting a virtual event for Americans living around the world who “want it to be known that we are against the inhuman caging of undocumented men, women, and children in concentration camps.”
Five main events have been planned:
Key events are planned in El Paso, Texas, where migrants are being housed in outdoor conditions under a bridge with no running water for months at a time; Homestead, FL, at a migrant child detention facility that has caused mass abuse and neglect; in San Diego, near the point of entry site from Tijuana; in New York City, at Foley Square, where hundreds of migrants are processed through detention a day; and in Washington, DC, in Lafayette Park, to demand action from Congress to end concentration camps and impeach the President. Legislators, activists, organizers, and members of impacted communities will speak prior to the candlelight vigil.
But volunteers have stepped up to host hundreds of local events throughout the United States at detention centers, in parks, outside local government offices, and at faith centers.
Even if you cannot attend a main or a local event, you could participate by lighting a candle in front of your home. Perhaps invite your neighbors to join in solidarity with our fellow human beings and against the cruel and inhumane treatment of migrants in concentration camps throughout our country.
At 9pm [local time], please hold a candle and share a moment of silence. Together we will light up the world (and social media) to demand an end to human detention camps.
