Since most of the Daily Kos gang is away to NetRoots Nation in Philadelphia, I thought I would post an amusing little tale of poetic justice from Texas for your reading pleasure.
My former boss (now a part-time employee) and I were chatting back in May about his plans for the summer. While he was a fantastic boss to work for, his politics are unfortunately typical for Texas – God, guns, anti-choice, anti-immigrant, you name it, because that’s what ALL older white, evangelicals must believe! Anyway, he mentioned he was going to Cancun this summer and I assumed since he’s an avid diver that was his purpose for the trip.
“So, good diving in Cancun?” I asked.
“Actually, we’re going to a destination wedding there” he replied.
“Sweet, who’s getting married?”
“My son, Micah” he said.
“Well, congrats to him and his new bride!” I added.
Then his eyes lowered as he said “Yeah, I really wish he wasn’t doing this. He met this girl in California who’s a Mexican national and says he’s in love with her. I really wanted him to marry a white girl, but he just isn’t listening.”
After picking my jaw up off the ground, I said “Well, it’s his marriage so…” and trailed off...
Then he went on in more depth than I would have preferred. “Bill, I just can’t believe he would do this to me! Now we have to travel for a week to meet all these Mexicans I’ll never see again, and pretend everything’s great! Why couldn’t he just marry a nice white woman?”
Not a word about his son’s happiness or his future daughter-in-law’s well-being…no mention of the Mexican family’s expenses for travel or in setting up wedding arrangements…only bitching about his damn inconvenience, his son’s poor choice in ladies, and how “rebellious” that kid of his was…
I looked at him and spit out the best reply I could think of and said, “So I guess love wins again, right?” and walked away.
I truly hope his son’s wedding was spectacular and memorable for everyone, but I would have paid big bucks to be the proverbial fly on the wall when he met his future in-laws...hope he left the MAGA cap at home!
