STANDING ROCK JOINS THE WORLD’S INDIGENOUS FIGHTING
FOR LAND AND LIFE occupy.com
"When opposition to the Dakota Access pipeline galvanized the support of hundreds of U.S. tribes, it became an unprecedented show of Indian Country unity and resolve.
Now, it’s a global indigenous movement.
Members of tribal communities from around the world have joined in activism led by the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. A Sami group from Norway was the latest to arrive on Friday. This resistance campaign, many say, has emerged as part of a greater global crisis—a united struggle in which indigenous lands, resources, and people are perpetually threatened by corporations and governments often using military force. Integral to this shared narrative is the routine ignoring of treaties.
In their continued struggle, the Lakota Sioux are advancing an Indigenous agenda that calls for governments to acknowledge the unique and inherent rights of First Peoples."occupy.com

I’m an ordinary person who joined an Extinction Rebellion blockade. Here's why you should too.
It was way out of my comfort zone, but as a scientist I can tell you that the climate emergency is much more terrifying

Mission Statement Extinction Rebellion US:
" Without changes taken soon, our society and culture will collapse within the next several decades, causing mass migration, starvation, and unimaginable human suffering. Government must tell the truth by declaring a climate and ecological emergency, working with other institutions to communicate the urgency for change.Government must act now to halt biodiversity loss and reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net-zero by 2025. Government must create and be led by the decisions of a Citizens’ Assembly on climate and ecological justice." -Extinction Rebellion mission statement.
That the Government must tell the truth about the climate and wider ecological emergency, it must reverse all policies not in alignment with that position and must work alongside the media to communicate the urgency for change including what individuals, communities and businesses need to do.
The Government must enact legally-binding policies to reduce carbon emissions to net zero by 2025 and take further action to remove the excess of atmospheric greenhouse gases. It must cooperate internationally so that the global economy runs on no more than half a planet’s worth of resources per year.
We do not trust our Government to make the bold, swift and long-term changes necessary to achieve these changes and we do not intend to hand further power to our politicians. Instead we demand a Citizens’ Assembly to oversee the changes, as we rise from the wreckage, creating a democracy fit for purpose.
We demand a just transition that prioritizes the most vulnerable people and indigenous sovereignty; establishes reparations and remediation led by and for Black people, Indigenous people, people of color and poor communities for years of environmental injustice, establishes legal rights for ecosystems to thrive and regenerate in perpetuity, and repairs the effects of ongoing ecocide to prevent extinction of human and all species, in order to maintain a livable, just planet for all.

Sunrise Movement is an American youth-led political movement coordinated by Sunrise, a 501(c)(4) political action organization that advocates political action on climate change. When first incorporated in 2017, the group's goal was to elect proponents of renewable energy in the 2018 midterm elections,[2] first in the Democratic primaries and then in the general election. After the election, the organization has been focused on gaining a consensus within the Democratic Party in support of an environmental program known as the Green New Deal.
Together with Justice Democrats and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the group organized a sit-in in the office of Nancy Pelosi, which brought Sunrise its first significant press coverage.[3] Sunrise organized a similar event in February 2019, bringing a group of young people to confront Senator Dianne Feinstein in her office.
After the 2018 elections, the Sunrise Movement has focused on the climate change proposals collectively known as the Green New Deal, whose core principles have been described as "decarbonization, jobs, and justice."[3] Its proposals include a transition to renewable energy, expanded public transportation, and an economic plan to drive job growth. Several publications have reported that the Green New Deal opposes nuclear power and carbon capture as well as some other technologies.[6][7] However, Senator Ed Markey, the co-sponsor of the Green New Deal resolution in the United States senate, stated that the resolution's language is technology-agnostic and does not exclude nuclear power or carbon capture.[8]en.m.wikipedia.org/…
Is protest effective?
Opinion
"Was protest effective in the Vietnam era?"
"On the titular query, the protests were effective. They were able to establish an early foundation for anti-war protest. While they might not have converted the majority of the American population, they were able to bring attention to the issues. As to the second which asks about the claims made that politicians and citizens already wanted an end to war and that the movements hindered that, I would say no, that is false.
The anti-war protesters were not new protesters - they were those who had participated in the early Civil Rights movement, students from the Berkeley '64 protests, and groups like SDS that had criticised the government and the usurping of the peoples political voice. It was no single protest group, but rather an amalgamation of many. The war acted as a standard for them to rally around, which made their voices more potent as more numbers gathered.
SNCC, the student group that had been a major presence in the Civil Rights Movement had a focus on the war in 1965. Teach-ins at universities were attended by thousands of students. SDS held a protest in Washington D.C. in April 1965, with around 25,000 people present. This opposition to the war was covered by media, disseminating the views of the students to the wider public.
Senator Fulbright, launched "Congressional hearings to investigate US policy in Vietnam and publicly questioned Johnson's key advisers", but he didn't do so until 1966, two years after he helped pass the Gulf of Tonkin resolution, which gave LBJ wide power to increase the scope of the war. Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy didn't come out publicly against the war until 1967. At the start of 1965, there was broad support for the war among Americans, as long as it wasn't escalated. The advisors to the President knew about the anti-war sentiments that were present in 1965, but they were a minority view.
The high point of the protests arguably was 1968, when antiwar protesters disrupted the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. There were other high profile events too, such as Kent State in 1970. Both of these were more than 3 years after the first major antiwar protest in Washinton D.C.
It was the growing escalation of the war, and the much publicised protests of the early anti-war groups that led to wider questioning of the administration, and from there, to a much wider anti-war sentiment among both the American public, and the political elite."

"Just a footnote: The 50th anniversary of that first SDS march is in three days (April 17), and the "25,000 people" is at the extreme high end of estimates.
In his biography, Many Battles, Sen. Ernst Gruening (D-Alaska) says, "I was gratified by the increasing number of antiwar rallies and 'teach-ins,' including one at the outdoor Sylvan Theater in Washington on April 17, which twelve thousand attended."
Gruening was a speaker at that rally, and I'm inclined to trust his estimate, which is comparable to others given by impartial sources. Though that's less than half the 25,000 figure, it was still the largest peace rally in American history to that point.
Five years later, there would be more than 100,000 people in a similar Washington, D.C. protest.
Gruening himself cites public opinion as a key element in Johnson's decision to not run for a second term: "Finally, the rising tide of public opinion─which President Johnson thought he could ignore─pulled him down. Senator Eugene McCarthy's stand on Vietnam and his showing in the New Hampshire primary early in 1968 foreshadowed President Johnson's defeat, and he chose not to run for reelection."
"The IPCC gave us 12 years to set the wheels in motion to save ourselves from the apocalypse known as climate change. Now in the scientific community, a consensus is building that we have only 18 months to implement aggressive climate policy"dailykos.com/…

Extinction Rebellion is a socio-political movement which uses nonviolent resistance to protest against climate breakdown, biodiversity loss, and the risk of social and ecological collapse. Wikipedia
"Extinction Rebellion was established in the United Kingdomin May 2018 with about one hundred academics signing a call to action in support in October 2018,[6] and launched at the end of October by Roger Hallam, Gail Bradbrook, Simon Bramwell, and other activists from the campaign group Rising Up![7]
Citing inspiration from grassroots movements such as Occupy, Gandhi's Satyagraha, the suffragettes, Gene Sharp[9], Martin Luther King and others in the civil rights movement, Extinction Rebellion wants to rally support worldwide around a common sense of urgency to tackle climate breakdown.[10][8] A large number of activists in the movement have pledged to be arrested, and even to go to prison,[11] similar to the mass arrest tactics of the Committee of 100 in 1961.
The movement uses a circled hourglass, known as the Extinction Symbol

Aims:
Extinction Rebellion's website states its aims as:
NON-VIOLENT REBELLION AGAINST THE US GOVERNMENT FOR ITS CRIMINAL INACTION ON THE ECOLOGICAL CRISIS
- Government must tell the truth by declaring a climate and ecological emergency, working with other institutions to communicate the urgency for change.
- Government must act now to halt biodiversity loss and reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net-zero by 2025.
- Government must create and be led by the decisions of a Citizens’ Assembly on climate and ecological justice.
Stated principles:
XR state the following on its website and explain in a declaration:[15][4]
- "We have a shared vision of change – creating a world that is fit for generations to come.
- We set our mission on what is necessary – mobilising 3.5% of the population to achieve system change – using ideas such as "momentum-driven organising" to achieve this.
- We need a regenerative culture – creating a culture which is healthy, resilient and adaptable.
- We openly challenge ourselves and this toxic system – leaving our comfort zones to take action for change.
- We value reflecting and learning – following a cycle of action, reflection, learning, and planning for more action. Learning from other movements and contexts as well as our own experiences.
- We welcome everyone and every part of everyone – working actively to create safer and more accessible spaces.
- We actively mitigate for power – breaking down hierarchies of power for more equitable participation.
- We avoid blaming and shaming – we live in a toxic system, but no one individual is to blame.
- We are a non-violent network – using non-violent strategy and tactics as the most effective way to bring about change.
- We are based on autonomy and decentralisation – we collectively create the structures we need to challenge power. Anyone who follows these core principles and values can take action in the name of RisingUp!"[16]
