Rep. Tlaib was in Detroit on July 21, 2019 in support of One Fair Wage, a Michigan organization working to increase the minimum wage. Speaking at that occasion, Rep. Tlaib said that the current proposal of $15 per hour is too low and that it should be $20.
"Think about that for one minute," Tlaib said. "People cannot live on those kinds of wages. We can't allow people to be living off of tips and relying on tipped wages."
"By the way, when we started it, it should have been $15. Now I think it should be $20. Make sure America Rising hears that. It should be $20 an hour. $18 to $20 an hour at this point."
The House of Representatives passed a bill just three days earlier - on July 18, 2019 - to hike the federal minimum wage to $15 per hour; however, it is not expected to pass the Senate. The 2020 Democratic presidential candidates support raising the minimum wage to $15 per hour. It is not clear if any of them have been asked about a minimum wage higher than $15 per hour.
Sen. Bernie Sanders - one of the candidates - was faced recently with campaign staff who alleged that they were not receiving $15 for every hour worked. (The controversy over Bernie Sanders’s low-paid field staffers, explained) Sanders campaign addressed the matter by cutting staff hours to effectively raise wages to $15 an hour. There were similar reports (NYC restaurants cutting staff hours as minimum wage hits $15) about the impact of minimum wage hike from New York City earlier this year. On the other hand, a study of the effects of wage increases in Seattle
...found that workers who were already employed at the low end of the wage scale in Seattle “enjoyed significantly more rapid hourly wage growth,” following wage increases in 2015 and 2016.
