Will Hurd (R–TX-23) announced today that he will not seek re-election to a fourth term in the House.
Hurd’s district, TX-23, is one of the largest in the country, covering over 50,000 square miles in west Texas between San Antonio and El Paso. He barely won re-election in 2018 over Democrat Gina Ortiz Jones, winning by just 0.5%.
Hurd is the ninth House Republican to announce his retirement this year, and the third from Texas this week.
Hurd’s loss isn’t much of one for the country, though: he’s announced that he will support Trump if he’s up for re-election in 2020, and he seems interested in running for the Republican nomination in 2024.
All in all, this is a good chance for yet another House pickup for the Dems in 2020.
