There was a day, one day, when I thought I had lost my country. It was election day 2004. I didn’t blame people who voted for Bush in 2000, I blamed those who had seen what he did and voted for him again. The next day was my fist day of political activism. I wallowed in self-pity for the day and got to work to defeat that sh*t when I woke up.
I love America and F U wingnuts who tell yourselves otherwise. I am the biggest jingoistic NY prick you are going to meet and I’m proud of it. Come visit my town (NYC) and I will welcome you and share with you all that we have to offer- Your town comes in 2nd. Many visitors have acknowledged how we have come to their aid when they have a problem, but it is much more than that.
New York City is America.
The Lady with the Lamp in the harbor belongs there to say hello and the UN on the East River knows that someone from home lives here even when they don’t work in the building. Me? I’m a native. My Grandparents came through Ellis Island and I grew up near JFK. We have a bad rep in NYC but it is undeserved.
In my America, we hold the door for each other, we wait. We smile and say thank you. If you trip and fall we pick you up. We are courteous. And we are from everywhere- even here. My New York friends are from every country on earth including the United States like our former Senator who ran for President.
I have co-workers from Russia, India, Turkey, and Barbados. I have been to weddings in Jamaica and Ireland, and I spent New Year’s Eve in Iceland- Friends have made those experiences a reality. I grew up believing the America was a melting pot- New York is the reality of that melting pot. I was here in NYC in 1993 when terrorists blew up a van in the World Trade Center, and I was here in 2001 when Terrorists flew airplanes into the buildings.
Terrorists know where I live, so I don’t shake in my shoes when the RWNJ tell me they open carry- Why do they think that is a valid debate point?
On that subject, there are 30,000 plus police in this town, and no I don’t need a gun to protect myself. I don’t need to carry a gun to prove the 2nd Amendment and I don’t need to burn a flag to prove the 1st.
If you don’t have a problem with “legal” immigration, you are a lying racist. Immigrants are coming here looking for a better life just like YOUR ancestors. My family has been here for about 100 years, but America owes reparations. Why should I pay? Because MY family came to a country that benefited from that Slave work. I’m not here today if it didn’t happen. Okay, I’m done.
