In 1997, David Poole left the Roanoke Times to start this organization. It was to be a data base of campaign financing across Virginia. VPAP transformed campaign finance disclosure in Virginia. Over the years, VPAP has expanded its mission to connect Virginians with nonpartisan information about politics. From the start VPAP was funded by tax exempt donations including my small donations over the years.
I used the information both for campaigns and in my high school government classroom explaining where the money to cover the costs of elections in Virginia comes from. Mainly because it was a non-partisan organization that gave anyone accurate information for free.
Unfortunately, this past week they threw their impartiality out the window. Those who have read my previous posts know that my candidate in the 30th House of Delegates District is Ann F. RIdgeway. Her opponent failed to get his name on the ballot because he neglected to file the necessary paper work. For two weeks Ann was listed as the only candidate for this seat since she was the only one who qualified to have her name on the ballot.
This week VPAP changed its long standing position of not listing write-in candidates. VPAP listed Nick Freitas as the Republican nominee and incumbent. He is the incumbent but never qualified as the Republican nominee. After many posts on Twitter, Facebook, and many emails to VPAP, they moved Nick out of the Republican column. There is no Republican nominee for this seat.
