VA 7th for Progress, a grassroots SuperPAC that helped unseat Dave Brat, is offering a matching contribution opportunity in support of Democratic House candidate Ann Ridgeway (#HD30). Go HERE to take advantage of this opportunity (now through the weekend only!).
Ann is running in a red district, but her campaign received an unexpected boost when her opponent, Nick Freitas, and a Republican Party official failed between them to file three crucial documents and so Freitas’s name will not be on the ballot! Freitas has called foul and has acknowledged zero responsibility, instead posting on YouTube a pathetic video where he blames his lapse on a left-wing conspiracy! He has also vowed to run a write-in campaign. SemDem has just posted an excellent article with much of the background.
This is a rare opportunity for Democrats, but it’s hardly a sure thing. In such a red district with a well-known opponent, Ann is not a shoo-in: it’s more like she’s got her foot in the door. Ann needs our help in getting her name, her story, and her fantastic message out to voters!

Inside baseball: Tea Party darling Freitas was a rising star in the VA GOP (he lost the US Senate primary to Corey Stewart by a hair in the attempt to unseat Tim Kaine). He and his wife Tina teamed up this past spring against two GOP incumbents who had voted with Democrats to expand Medicaid, with Tina herself running from the right against one of them, Emmett Hanger. Hanger, in addition to wanting to make healthcare accessible to more Virginians, had also sinned in the eyes of the Freitases by agreeing to some modest gun restrictions. Tina got trounced (seems Virginians like getting healthcare and most are in favor of some restrictions on guns).
How does this matter? On the one hand, the Freitases may have lost good will within the Party over primarying Hanger, so the Party may not flood Nick with the hundreds of thousands of dollars he’d need to run a successful write-in — especially when they’re defending a record number of seats already. On the other hand, Tea Partiers LOVE Nick, and if they believe his left-wing conspiracy gambit, which they will, they’ll couple that with the RINO-conspiracy theory that’s already baked in and they’ll donate to their martyr in droves. We cannot assume Freitas will lose a write-in! Ann needs money to get HER message to HER voters and to remind them to VOTE on November 5th.
So...who is Ann Ridgeway? She is nothing short of terrific and just the sort of person we need in the VA House. She’s the real deal.
Listen HERE to Ann at her June “We the People” rally.
Ann is a community activist who has worked throughout her career to improve her community. She’s the daughter of activists in the civil rights movement who were lifelong community activists and advocates for the
underserved. Ann’s own work has centered on young people; she has worked as a juvenile probation counsellor and was instrumental in establishing a youth council and a youth commission in her county. She has been a public school teacher and her three children have attended public schools (tragically, one died at the age of six in a car accident). Go HERE for more on Ann’s background.
So that we in Virginia can pass gun control legislation and support our rural communities with good health care, schools, infrastructure, environmental protections, and broadband —
