Campaign Action
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has finally come out of hiding to respond to demands that the Senate act immediately on gun safety legislation, only to say he won't allow it to do so. On Kentucky radio Thursday, reported by The New York Times' Sheryl Gay Stolberg, he said he will not bring the Senate back early from August recess.
He also said "background checks, red flag laws and even assault weapons ban will be discussed" when they return. He said he "wants to pass legislation," to which the entire nation should say: “Prove it." He also says Trump is "very much open to this discussion." In direct contradiction of his actions, he also said "I think the urgency of this is not lost on any of us because we've seen entirely too many of these horrendous acts."
Yes. We have. For years. With McConnell's Senate DOING NOTHING.
He also said, "We are having bipartisan discussion and when we come back we will hopefully pass something. […] I want an outcome." There’s two perfectly good bills sitting right on McConnell’s desk that got Republican votes in the House back in February. They would make a phenomenal start, since he is suddenly so intent on getting an outcome.
So what's the wait? And why isn't whoever he's having "bipartisan discussion" with putting this on full boil by going back to D.C., occupying the Senate floor, and forcing him to answer as to why he's not willing to cut his break short to do this? It's time to make it clear to the nation that McConnell and his Republicans are derelict in their duties.
The best way to do that is for the Democrats to show up.
