“The federal government posted a budget deficit of $200.3 billion in August, slightly less than a year ago. But the fiscalyear-to-date budget deficit climbed to $1.067 trillion, surpassing the trillion-dollar mark for the first time since 2012. TheTreasury projects the deficit will finish fiscal 2019 above a trillion dollars, and will widen slightly to $1.045 trillion in 2020.The 12-month total deficit represented 4.5% of GDP, near the biggest gap since May 2013”
Just read that in a research report from Ned Davis Research. Crickets from the Republicans. Hypocrites. I admit to turning off the debate after a little over an hour last night but when I listened and in the recaps I read today there was no mention of the deficit.
This strikes me as a simple and effective message for November 2020. The budget deficit exceeds $1 trillion. Over twice the level when President Obama left office. The national debt is at its highest level ever (a less important fact in reality but one that seemed to catch people’s attention when President Obama was in office). Debt as a percentage of GDP highest since early in President’s Obama’s second term. Add a couple quotes by Trump and other Republicans complaining about the deficit and debt. It is a nice short and direct message that will resonate.
