September 2019
Salish Sea, PacificNorthwest
Shoulder season at the beach. Fairly quiet overall. Some days there’s nobody wandering around. Most of the action is gulls, who are done nesting and back from their offshore breeding islands. Other birds come through periodically.
This beach is mostly Glaucous-winged gulls. The Mews are primarily at the other two local beaches, although their characteristic mewing wail tells me they’re here too, if farther from the beach. Been seeing quite of bit of courtship behavior among the gulls lately, which is about 6 months off schedule. It’s not uncommon for birds to get spring fever in September, their internal clock mistaking our current daylength for what they do when it’s also this length, in March. These pics below are all courtship behaviors, as is the “seaweed offering” display in the title.
🌕
Cloudy in the PNW islands. Foggy, heard foghorn earlier. Rained intermittently yesterday and last night. We’ve picked up more than an inch in Sept so far, which is wetter than usual, forecast is for a lot more tonight. Fairly warm, 60s. Breezy.
