Received this e-mail from former Attorney General Eric Holder’s National Democratic Redistricting Committee:
It’s no secret that Republicans’ control of state legislatures gave them map-drawing power during 2011 redistricting. That’s what the infamous REDMAP project was all about -- winning state legislative elections in 2010 to control redistricting in 2011.
The question is, will they repeat their success in 2020? Or will Democrats be able to roll back their gains? Republicans are banking on the former. In fact, the Republican State Legislative Committee just announced REDMAP 2.0, which it's calling "Right Lines 2020."
But we’re here to ensure what happened in 2011 doesn’t happen again. The NDRC is looking to flip a whopping 16 state legislatures between 2019 and 2020 to make sure Democrats are at the table to demand fair maps in 2021. Will you help us flip them all?
It’s not a pipe dream. Some of these chambers are so close to flipping:
- We’re only three seats away in the Wisconsin Senate
- We’re only four seats away in the Pennsylvania Senate
- We’re only six seats away in the North Carolina House
- And we’re just two seats away in the Virginia Senate!
Our investments in 2017 and 2018 helped us get to this point (and flip six other chambers in 2018!). Now we have to stay the course and finish the job. In the wake of the Supreme Court’s June ruling against putting guardrails on partisan gerrymandering, it’s especially important to win in the states.
But we’re talking about hundreds of races, so how much we can do depends on you. Will you chip in to help us beat the GOP at the state legislative level?
Thanks,
Team NDRC
