Welcome 😄 to Friday’s Roundup of Good News!
I have read recent diaries that people here are tired or discouraged. I understand that; I have felt that way myself. The breadth and depth of the corruption; the way they spit on Democracy, on the Constitution, even on babies and the ill.
You don’t have to read or react to everything. What I ask you instead is to do something. Because there are more of us than there are of them. Because sometimes the actions work.
Naming, shaming, works sometimes. The press shining a light works sometimes. To paraphrase Steve Trevor from the movie Wonder Woman, “My father told me when you see something wrong you can either do something or do nothing. I already tried nothing.”

No one here is naïve; we are aware of the very bad stuff that is happening. Some of us expected it: the cheating, the lying, the chaos, and yes, even the attempts to cling to power despite the clear will of the people. But we are here to read the efforts and the positive results of those (including us and our fellow gnus) who are working so hard to save our country from those very bad people. We are furious with them for what they are doing and we are letting them know. Remember:
💚 There are more of us than there are of them.
💛 They are terrified when we organize. THERE IS LOTS OF EVIDENCE THAT THEY ARE TERRIFIED!
💔 They want us to be demoralized. We have to keep demoralizing them. Name, blame and shame! IT IS WORKING! WE HAVE EVIDENCE THAT THEY ARE DEMORALIZED!
💙 The best way to keep up your spirits is to fight. So, take the time to recharge your batteries, but find ways to contribute to the well-being of our country and our world.

🔎 Whistleblower seems to be about Trump soliciting a bribe from Ukraine
And it’s clear. Trump solicited a bribe (which constitutes bribery whether the exchange was made or not). He solicited an item of personal value — namely, dirt on Joe Biden — in exchange for the official action of signing off on military aid to Ukraine.
Again, I am not a lawyer, but the hard thing to prove with bribery (see the LII link above) is usually that there’s a direct quid pro quo, because influence isn’t enough — there has to be clear cause and effect. But that’s precisely what it seems Trump was dumb enough to say out loud.
⚡️ According to The Daily Beast, this information could “upend” the 2020 presidential campaign
🤥And Giuliani admits wrongdoing on TV
And who do we have to thank? The press, the whistleblower, and the House democrats.
From Tuesday:
Also, Lewandowski was eviscerated by CNN when he tried to lie about it to them. 👎
❓😨❓Something I have brought up in comments this week, and want to bring up here: could Trump be suffering from dementia? The following is from a thread by Tom Joseph in Chicago, who is not a doctor, but who has dealt with plenty of dementia in his own family and so knows it first-hand.
1 Nancy Pelosi recently had ominous words about Trump's family holding an “intervention” & “fearing for his well being.” These words were echoed yesterday by Pete Buttigieg when he said “I’m really worried about the…I feel sorry for the President.” Why did Buttigieg say that?
2 Why would Buttigieg feel sorry for Trump? A racist, Russian asset, money laundering, self described sex assaulter? Why would Buttigieg hesitate, kind of like he knew something & was looking for the right words. Seems like he’s getting ahead of the story. ✂️

Some people may think it’s irresponsible to turn a light on this. But what if it’s true? First, there’s a significant genetic component, and Trump’s father had Alzheimer’s for six years. Trump is currently 73 years, and as this diary (which is warning about the danger of electing an older D candidate) points out, cognitive impairment increases with age. Also, Trump drinks a lot of diet coke, and although some analysts aren’t sure if there’s a correlation between diet soda and dementia, that stuff is just really bad for you. Finally, obesity increases dementia risk, and our eyes aren’t lying; Trump is fat.
What could we expect if Trump has dementia? From his handlers? Reduction in public appearances, lots of mistakes, as well as attempts to cover those mistakes (coming down hard on the NOAA to lie about weather forecasts). We could expect word to spread (looks as if Pelosi knows, or at least suspects, something).
What should we do about it? Well, if Biden is our nominee, we may be in trouble, because he could be accused of the same thing. Sanders isn’t young either. But I think we should highlight this possibility, because if Trump does have dementia, the country really needs to know about it.
Writing and talking about it will also force the other side to take action. In the short-term they will try to prove that Trump doesn’t have the condition. But if he does, it’s something they can’t do anything about. It’s a one-way escalator heading down, and just a few more months may make a big difference. (Actually, I think they have been doing something about it — pills.) And with increased exposure, the chances of a fall on camera become greater — he’s nearly fallen at least once.
From the twitter thread above:
16 What will it take to force Trump's removal? Probably when he starts falling in public. It's apparent he's already had falls and mishaps. What happened on the stairs at the G7 could have ended up much worse and shocked people.
Sure looks to me as if there are bruises on his head, above his nose, and to the left of his left eye (or to the right of his right eye, using the perspective of Trump).

🚫⚖🚫Judge banned from bench after posting bad stuff on Facebook
The New York State Commission on Judicial Conduct announced on Tuesday that a state judge has been permanently barred from the bench after the commission filed a complaint over a threatening Facebook post that “conveyed racial and/or political bias.”
The official complaint shows that Altona Town Court Justice Kyle Canning had posted in February an image of a noose with text that read “IF WE WANT TO MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN WE WILL HAVE TO MAKE EVIL PEOPLE FEAR PUNISHMENT AGAIN.”
According to the commission’s press release, Canning resigned in June after the commission served him the complaint regarding the post and has agreed “never to seek or accept judicial office at any time in the future.”
Something I wonder about: how can so many people think that stuff they post on Facebook is not public? This judge needed to step down because he was obviously racist, but also because he doesn’t seem very bright.
Or maybe he has been living in a right-wing bubble, where he thinks everyone agrees with him. If he hadn’t had the noose, I would have agreed with his statement, although we probably would have disagreed on what makes people evil.
From the Maddow Blog, where FEMA people are in trouble
As Rachel noted at the top of last night's [Wednesday’s] show, all has not been well at FEMA of late. One key official has been caught up in a bribery scandal, and we learned soon after that her deputy was caught up in an entirely different scandal. The most recent FEMA administrator, Brock Long, was investigated for misusing public funds and resigned from his post under a cloud of controversy.
It was against this backdrop that Trump tapped Jeffrey Byard to lead FEMA, though his nomination quickly ran into trouble, and the White House made no real effort to defend him. There's an official explanation for Byard's withdrawal from consideration, though there's ample reason to be skeptical of the administration's line.
Maybe if Team Trump had vetted Byard before the president nominated him to lead FEMA, this could've been avoided, but the Trump White House can be defined in large part by its staggering ineptitude in this area.
These FEMA folks seem to be part of the reason that Puerto Rico has been suffering so much.
👎 ⚖👎 Conservative PAC fundraiser pleads guilty to fraud
In one of the first Justice Department cases of its kind, Maryland political consultant Kelley Rogers pleaded guilty to wire fraud on Tuesday for operating multiple fraudulent political action committees that raised money from donors for conservative causes but kept much of the funds for Rogers and his associates.
Rogers’ arrest and indictment took place shortly after Politico and ProPublica investigated one of Rogers’ PACs, Conservative Majority Fund, which since 2012 has raised close to $10 million — mostly from small-dollar donors, many of them elderly — while giving out just $48,400 to politicians.
I hope word of these stunts spread.
💙 Democrats Are Great 🌊

💛 Moscow Mitch caves and lets election security pass
After months of constantly blocking bipartisan efforts to address foreign election hacking, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) finally gave in on Thursday and announced his support for an election security funding measure of $250 million.
During a speech on the Senate floor, McConnell said he was “proud” that the Senate’s appropriations bill includes an bipartisan amendment that would grant states $250 million in funding to help them beef up security for their voting systems. ✂️
In an official statement on Thursday, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) applauded McConnell’s decision but warned that the measure alone isn’t sufficient to combat election meddling from foreign governments.
You know how this got done? By pushing the meme “Moscow Mitch” — and I know many of us have helped that happen — and by contacting our representatives. I contacted my senators on election security, one of who is an R, and obviously it didn’t hurt.
💙 Threat of more House hearings gets Trump administration to reverse murderous policy on sick kids
The Trump administration has been largely defined by its unrelenting cruelty against undocumented immigrants—but on Thursday, the White House admitted a rare moment of defeat. The Department of Homeland Security said that it will officially reinstate a medical deferred action practice that offers temporary protections to migrants receiving treatment for serious illnesses, after canceling the program in August without any warning. “At the direction of Acting Secretary McAleenan, [U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services] is resuming its consideration of non-military deferred action requests on a discretionary, case-by-case basis,” a DHS adviser wrote in an email to stakeholders, which was first obtained by WBUR.
The initial news that the Trump administration had canceled the
longstanding legal practice—which offers essential, life-saving protections to children and families with cancer, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, and other ailments—was understandably met with widespread outrage and
legal challenges. The House Oversight Committee held a
hearing on the policy's cancellation earlier in September, in which ill children affected by the program testified that they would die if sent back to their home countries—and a USCIS official
refused to answer why the administration had cancelled medical deferred action in the first place. In an attempt to mitigate the blowback, USCIS initially claimed that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement would handle the deferred action applications instead, prompting ICE to shoot back and say they had no idea what USCIS was talking about. “ICE is not going to implement any sort of a program or procedure or policy to take over that function,” an ICE official told
WBUR in August. “We'd like USCIS to clarify what they mean.” Before completely reversing their decision on Thursday, the administration had
partially caved to the pressure on September 2, saying they would process the applications that had been sent in before the program ended—which had previously been outright rejected—but refusing to comment on whether future applications would be allowed.
I actually learned about it by listening to The Rachel Maddow Show, which has been great about emphasizing this issue, and which is where I learned about the fact that another House hearing on the subject was planned. See, media + us + House can make a difference.
We’ll have to be vigilant, of course, as these are not people who keep their words. To rephrase Reagan, Don’t trust — verify.
👎🔨 Pelosi tells Dems Lewandowski should be held in contempt
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told other Democratic lawmakers Wednesday that former Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski should've been immediately held in contempt for refusing to cooperate with lawmakers during a Congressional hearing, the Washington Post first reported.
Why it matters: Per Axios' Alayna Treene, there was overwhelming consensus among House Democrats Axios interviewed after Lewandowski appeared before the House Judiciary Committee Tuesday that the chaotic hearing did nothing to galvanize public support for impeaching President Trump.
The big picture: Politico reports that Pelosi addressed the issue of Lewandowski declining to answer questions that involved conversations with President Trump not referenced in the Mueller report. Pelosi's spokeswoman Ashley Etienne confirmed the report of the speaker's comments in a statement to news outlets.
🐶 Graham nips the president
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) told The Daily Beast on Tuesday that the Trump administration’s so-called maximum pressure campaign on Iran isn’t working.
“Clearly what we’re doing isn’t working,” Graham said, adding that the goal of the administration’s Iran policy should be to deter Tehran from escalating tensions in the region.
Following his phone call with The Daily Beast, Graham in a series of tweets called on the Trump administration to do more, saying the “measured response” by President Trump is “seen by the Iranian regime as an act of weakness.” On the same night as a Tuesday fundraising event in Silicon Valley, Trump tweeted back at Graham: “No Lindsey, it was a sign of strength that some people just don’t understand!”
I don’t trust Graham or Trump, and I certainly don’t want Graham to goad Trump into doing something stupid, but what I find interesting is that the Lindsey Lapdog is criticizing Trump at all. Maybe all those low polls are getting to some of the Rs still in office.

A four-term Republican U.S. Congressman who represents a district President Donald Trump won by double digits has just announced he is retiring at the end of his term. Rep. Paul Cook of California will run for a seat on the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors, according to the L.A. Times and The Hill.
Republicans, who know they cannot win back the House next year, are leaving in droves.
Rep. Cook becomes the 18th Republican to announce they are leaving the U.S. House of Representatives this term. By comparison, only four Democrats have announced they are leaving.
Then there was this, from Thursday’s Morning Digest at Dkos: 💛
NY-02: Longtime GOP Rep. Pete King told Newsday last week that he had not yet decided if he'd seek another term. The paper's question came after King's daughter and long-rumored successor, Hempstead Town Councilwoman Erin King Sweeney, announced that she wouldn't seek re-election this November and was moving to North Carolina for family reasons.
💙 A few (a very few) people in the financial industry actually support Warren
It is a small crew composed of everyone from IT workers to risk managers at small firms and larger outfits. It’s also one that isn't quite yet comfortable trumpeting its politics. Ocampo, for starters, would only talk on the condition that her place of employment not be listed. Others declined to be named at all or declined to comment given their public-facing roles in various financial institutions.
Being a Wall Street Warren backer, after all, can make one a pariah—a traitor to the cause of capitalism in its purest, unadulterated form. Earlier this month, CNBC host Jim Cramer declared that bank executives had grown fearful of the Massachusetts Democrat becoming president.
While that may be true, Warren’s candidacy has still resonated with a (very) small subset of employees at various financial institutions.
“Elizabeth dreamed up and successfully fought for the creation of a new government agency that has returned more than $12 billion to people who were cheated by big financial institutions,” a campaign spokesperson said. “She helped push two Wells Fargo CEOs out the door because of their role in scamming customers. She has led the fight against Wall Street giveaways, and is not cozying up to Wall Street at fundraisers. She has been the leader in holding Wall Street accountable and getting results—she will do the same as president.”
In fact, I bet more people there support her than is seen in the article. They just don’t dare show it with financial support because that information is public.
💛 Republican group attacks Mike Pence for enabling Trump’s corruption
A Republican group concerned about Donald Trump's rampant corruption released an ad on Thursday taking Vice President Mike Pence to task for his complicity.
Republicans for the Rule of Law released the ad Thursday with a spot during MSNBC's "Morning Joe" news program. The minutelong ad shows Pence's hypocrisy for attacking Hillary Clinton during the 2016 campaign and his unwillingness to hold Trump to any ethical standards whatsoever.
Why are they attacking Pence and not Trump? Perhaps they also suspect Trump won’t be around in a few months? Or perhaps because Pence deserves to be called out for it?
💙 House Democrats unveil new plan to make prescription drugs cheaper for seniors
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, trying to seize the agenda on a top consumer issue, announced an ambitious prescription drug plan Thursday that would allow Medicare to negotiate prices for seniors and younger people.
The proposal would direct Medicare to bargain over as many as 250, but no fewer than 25, of the costliest drugs. Insulin is on the list. Drugmakers that refuse to negotiate could face steep penalties. Companies that raise prices beyond inflation would have to pay rebates to Medicare.
The plan would limit copays for seniors covered by Medicare's "Part D" prescription drug program to $2,000. Medicare-negotiated prices would be available to other buyers, such as employer health plans.
I hope that they find ways to help younger folks too. I have read heartwrenching stories about people with Type 1 diabetes dying because they couldn’t afford insulin.

🎓🎒🎓New Mexico to offer tuition-free public college to NM residents 😄
The latest state to join the free college movement is New Mexico. And New Mexico is doing something truly unique: It is offering free tuition to every state resident who is accepted to state schools, no matter their income level. The plan is called the Opportunity Scholarship and would go into effect for the fall 2020 semester.
You know that would never have happened if NM wasn’t 💙 .
💛 Pennsylvania state senator (R) arrested, resigns
A Pennsylvania state senator resigned on Wednesday after being arrested for alleged child porn possession. Mike Folmer, a four-term Republican, faces four felony charges.
After his arrest Tuesday night, Folmer faced immediate calls to step down, including from members of his own party.
"We are sickened and disturbed by the charges brought against Mike Folmer yesterday," Senate President Pro Tempore Joe Scarnati and Senate Majority Leader Jake Corman, both Republicans, said in a joint statement Wednesday. They said they had spoken with Folmer and insisted on his resignation.

🔥 British antisemite sets hair on fire when attempting to burn down synagogue
London (CNN)A far-right extremist has been locked up in a UK hospital indefinitely after setting fire to a synagogue in the city of Exeter, Press Association (PA) reports.
Tristan Morgan, whom one prosecutor described as having "deep-rooted anti-Semitic belief," was sectioned under the Mental Health Act at London's Old Bailey on Friday, after the court heard that he was having a psychotic episode during the time of the attack. ✂️
The 52-year-old set the liquid alight, but it backfired. CCTV footage showed him being engulfed in a sudden jet of fire from the synagogue, which blew off his cap and singed his hair. The flames also left him with burns on his hands and forehead, PA reported.
He also did serious damage to the synagogue, but it appears that he is the only one who was injured.
👎 Texas teacher who tried to contact Trump to get her students deported is fired
In June, The Washington Post got its hands on tweets sent to Donald Trump from Fort Worth high school teacher Georgia Clark. Those tweets asked Trump to “clean up” Fort Worth, and get rid of the undocumented students from her district. She also had other racist things to say, such as “Texas will not protect whistle blowers. The Mexicans refuse to honor our flag.” Clark said she thought the tweets were “private,” though of course they weren’t. Clark’s terrible mindset and social media skills unearthed investigations of previous infractions by Clark that seemed to run along racial lines. Examples included calling a group of students “Little Mexico,” and telling a girl that her hair was “nappy.”
Almost immediately, the Fort Worth Independent School District board voted 8-0 to terminate Clark’s employment. Clark appealed her firing but on Tuesday, the Fort Worth ISD unanimously overruled her challenge and made its previous decision final

🐘 Orphaned elephant returns to human rescuers to introduce her new calf
It has been 14 years since this momma elephant was rescued from the wild as an orphaned calf—and now, she has returned many years later so she can introduce her own baby to the humans who saved her.
Loijuk was only 5 months when rescuers from the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (SWT) found her stranded in an arid, drought-stricken region of northern Kenya. After nursing her back to health, the happy pachyderm spent her adolescence surrounded by an adopted herd of other orphaned and rescued elephants just like her. ✂️
Loijuk’s most recent visit on September 1st, however, marked a very special occasion: she had just given birth to a female calf and she wanted to introduce the baby to the SWT rescuers.
So this is an example of love that is reciprocated. And Loijuk’s happy ending would never have happened without the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust — now in operation for something like 50 years — taking care of one orphaned elephant at a time. I once saw a long documentary on this organization, but I’m giving you the chance to look at a little one below.
📎📎Odds & Ends 📎📎
🚫💲🚫 Pentagon puts brakes on 3 border projects due to lack of funding
The Defense Department is no longer moving forward with three border barrier projects in California and Arizona, according to a court filing Monday.
The move is a reversal of an earlier Pentagon authorization for about 20 miles of fencing, lighting and other border infrastructure that would have used $2.5 billion in funds redirected from a counter-drug fund. That authorization, announced Aug. 27, was based on what was then determined to be "lower-than-expected contract costs." But the Defense Department revealed in the Monday filing that the department would not be able to cover the costs of the project.
The Defense Department initially authorized the funding after the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers determined that it would likely be able to afford the projects using the counter-drug funds, but the Army Corps said it would not know the full financial situation until later in the fiscal year.
I almost deleted this because I don’t know if there has been an update on this. If anyone out there knows, let me know in the comments.
🌳🌲🌴☎️Danish telethon to plant trees
In what is being hailed as the world’s first telethon devoted to protecting the climate, Denmark has raised enough money to plant almost 1 million trees across the country.
This weekend, the two-and-a-half hour live benefit event “Denmark Plants Trees” was broadcasted on the public television channel TV2. Musicians, actors, philanthropists, sports icons, and politicians all participated in the event as it was filmed from within the Gisselfeld Klosters Skove forest. ✂️
Furthermore, 20% of the money raised has already been set aside for preserving pre-existing Danish forests and protecting tropical rainforests abroad.
The telethon organizers at the Danish Society for Nature Conservation say that 600 hectares (1,482 acres) of national land have already been identified for future tree-planting events.
This has been reported in GNR comments earlier this week, but it is really worth repeating. I hope other countries adopt this method. And do it year after year, and show how forests are growing due to these efforts.
💰 Conservation group to buy sequoias
A Bay Area conservation group struck a deal to buy and to protect the world's largest remaining privately owned sequoia forest for $15.6 million. Now it needs to raise the money, according to CNN.
The San Francisco-based Save the Redwoods League negotiated for the past 20 years for the purchase of Alder Creek, a 530-acre hillside grove that houses 483 trees with a trunk diameter of more than six feet, including the 3,000-year-old Stagg Tree — the world's fifth largest tree, as the San Francisco Chronicle reported. ✂️
"This is probably the most-coveted sequoia conservation opportunity in a generation," said Sam Hodder, president of Save the Redwoods League, to the Mercury News in San Jose. "This is an alpine landscape covered with iconic, breathtaking, cinnamon-barked trees that are surrounded by pastures. It is such a superlative representation of nature. This is the prize. This is the best of what's left. It's a very special place."
Now the Save the Redwoods League needs to raise the requisite money for the purchase by the end of the year.

🌻 If you don’t like trees, how about algae?
The Eos Bioreactor, which was developed by Austin-based tech company Hypergiant Industries, uses AI to optimize algae growth, carbon capture, and algae output.
Since algae is 400 times better at sequestering carbon than trees, the reactor can process about two tons of oxygen in a year, which is about the same as an acre of trees. ✂️
As the algae consumes CO2, it also produces biomass, which can then be harvested and processed to create fuel, oils, nutrient-rich high-protein food sources, fertilizers, plastics, cosmetics, and more.
Measuring in at just 3 by 3 feet wide, the compact device is designed to only take up a small amount of urban space compared to similar bioreactor prototypes. Hypergiant plans to release the blueprints for the bioreactor to the online maker community later this year with the goal of empowering individuals to create similar, smaller and modular devices for use in residential units.
🚫💲🚫Chubb reducing its coal insurance exposure
The firm will no longer underwrite the building and operation of new coal-fired plants or new risks for companies that generate more than 30% of their revenues from coal mining.
Chairman Evan G. Greenberg said Chubb accepts "the reality of climate change... on our planet".
Allianz, Hannover, and Lloyds Banking Group have scaled back coal insurance.
Apparently this is from July but I have only seen it recently. As someone with ties to the insurance industry, I can assure you that everyone in it is aware of climate change.
🚫🔫🚫US gunmaker Colt to stop making rifles for civilians (at least for now)
Gunmaker Colt says it is suspending its production of rifles for the civilian market, including the popular AR-15.
Colt’s chief executive officer, Dennis Veilleux, says it is not permanently ending production but believes there is already an adequate supply of sporting rifles on the market. He said in a statement on Thursday the company will concentrate on fulfilling military and law enforcement contracts with its rifle manufacturing.
I expect the fact that demand is way down (which happens in a R presidency) is another reason for this decision. Still, it’s better than going the other way. Before you can clean up the flood in the house, it helps to turn off the water pouring in.
💙 What You Can Do to Rescue Democracy 💙
It turns out that participation in democracy is not just an every-four-years event but requires active participation, like, whenever you can find time. However, given that we have taken back the House, the tactics moving forward need to be different. Indivisible has ideas to share.
Indivisible 2.0
This Guide is for what comes next. The 2016 Indivisible Guide was about using constituent power to defend our values, our neighbors, and our democracy. This Guide is about using our constituent power to go on offense.
Offense is exciting, but it’s more complex than defense. We have the opportunity to use congressional oversight to hold Trump and his cronies accountable. We can set the legislative agenda with a bold progressive vision rooted in inclusion, fairness, and justice. But none of this is automatic — we have to demand it of Congress.
And some other ideas:
You can relax and recharge.
You can join protests and freeway blog.
You can help register new voters.
You can smile.
You can get out the vote for special elections.
You can reach out to upset Republicans. Remember, a lot of them crossed over in the midterms! Get them to feel good about being blue.
You can share your ideas below.
