I was listening to NPR in Boston earlier today, (Jim and Marjorie) and they had a guest on discussing the current impeachment shenanigans. The guest had a quiz about impeachment.
During that discussion, the name William Blount came up. Noted because he was impeached for: Helping England plot against Spain
France had just kicked Spain’s butt, and Blount feared that France would take over Louisiana and cut off our access to the Mississippi River. So Blount plotted to help England get it instead. Why? To protect his own financial hide, as he was a land speculator of western lands and the bottom was dropping out.
The impeachment process did not complete, only because he had been expelled from the US Senate. He was found guilty “of a high misdemeanor, entirely inconsistent with his public trust and duty as a Senator”
So, we have done impeachment before, and for pretty much the same reason as the current resident of the oval office.
Bonus points if we get stick fights in the Senate.
