Now that Kurt Volker has resigned, attention is turning to the other guy identified by the whistleblower as as a liaison between Giuliani and the Ukrainians, U.S. Ambassador to the European Union Gordon Sondland. Sondland has publicly stated that he spoke with both Trump and Zelensky prior to and after the infamous phone call:
“I spoke with both of them before and after this conversation,” Sondland told Ukraine’s state-run news agency after the phone call. “The conversation was very successful. They found a common language immediately.” The two leaders discussed Ukraine’s war, energy security, and “the rule of law,” Sondland said in July.
Interestingly, there is nothing in the so-called “transcript” of the call about the war or “energy security,” which seems to confirm suspicions that the “transcript” is far from complete.
Anyhow, according to the Daily Beast, Sondland (unlike Volker) has little diplomatic experience and was initially “uncomfortable” supporting Trump in 2016. In fact, after Trump’s ill treatment of a Muslim Gold Star family, Sondland and his wife said they would no longer support him. But after Trump won, he secretly donated $1 million to the inaugural committee through LLCs that masked his name, which apparently earned him an ambassadorship.
He was confirmed by the Senate with bipartisan support, with Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) commenting that Sondland’s "family history is both fascinating and instructive as to why he has the experience and understanding to serve as the U.S. Ambassador to the E.U.," noting how his Jewish parents fled Nazi Germany before coming to the United States.”
Sondland is already scheduled to be deposed on October 10. Let’s hope he remembers the Gold Star family and his parents escape from the Nazis and tells the whole truth about Trump and Rudy. The same for Volker, who should remember his mentor John McCain and not do any dirty work for the guy who was "never a fan" of McCain.
