If there’s a dumb, totally asinine, and completely false idea floating about the blessed ether just waiting for a home, you can pretty much rest assured it will find purchase in at least one Republican’s yawning, mephitic brain-hole.
And so in accordance with the immutable laws of the universe, this shit happened:
Rodney Garcia, a member of Montana’s state legislature, said the Constitution gives one permission to shoot a socialist just for being a socialist.
(Spoiler alert: That’s not true.)
The Washington Post:
Garcia’s inflammatory assertion first came Friday night, after former interior secretary Ryan Zinke gave a speech at the party event in Helena. According to reporting from the Gazette, Garcia said he was concerned there were socialists “everywhere” in Billings, which he represents in House District 52.
Billings Gazette reporter Holly Michels later asked Garcia to clarify his remarks, and the lawmaker doubled down.
“So actually in the Constitution of the United States, [if you] are found guilty of being a socialist member you either go to prison or are shot,” Garcia
told Michels.
Garcia was not able to say where he finds that in the Constitution, the Billings Gazette reported.
This might be a good time to remind you that a Montanan’s vote is worth a lot more in presidential elections than a Californian’s. You know, for what it’s worth. Not sure why I’m mentioning it.
But, hey, Republicans think it’s okay to bribe a foreign country with taxpayer money in exchange for election interference, so who knows what else they think is in the Constitution? You could tell Donald Trump it has three pages full of Buffalo wings recipes at the end of it, and he’d probably believe you. And then he might even read it. Who knows?
