In my sports philosophy class it was said that elite sports begin where good health ends. I think the same applies to spirituality. Christians under Roman persecution or as missionaries to Africa could have drastically shortened life spans. Like sports, spirituality involves mental focus and meaning which can bring ecstasy. Being a global citizen involves opening oneself to the suffering of distant others beyond the normal 150 person or so limits to relationships. Feeling compassion for everyone has a cost, which can be a monetary cost, as in paying your taxes or insurance. Giving to the poor can feel good. Capitalism is based on everybody acting on their selfish desire. People are really happier though when they can express compassion.
