Welcome to Episode #33 in this ongoing nightmare we call America with Donald Trump at the helm.
But then the good news is that Donald Trump is losing. Joe Biden continues to have a winning electoral map lead with 278 votes, even without Ohio, Florida, Arizona, Georgia and North Carolina. 17 Million votes have already been cast.
With his back to the wall, Trump’s hatchet men Giuliani and the indicted Steve Bannon have unleased their “bombshell” story from the New York Post about dozens of “found” emails between Ukrainian Energy company Burisma and Hunter Biden.
Hunter Biden and his “emails.”
Yep, this is what they’re going with. Hunter Biden.
First off, there’s a problem with the provenence of these emails.
Nothing in the story – from premise to conclusion – adds up, and it fails on its own terms. Even the person that Biden was alleged to have met with publicly said last year that he met with Kurt Volker, President Trump’s top envoy for the Ukraine crisis.
Separately, the New York Times reported on Wednesday that American spooks have been contacting people with knowledge of a hack attack on Burisma last year after “picking up chatter that stolen Burisma emails would be leaked in the form of an ‘October surprise.'”
All of this has since become mixed up in part with conservative faux concern around the legitimate question of whether massive platforms like Twitter and Facebook should be able to throttle access to the story.
So that’s bad.
Twitter and Facebook have blocked posts about this story — including suspending Kayleigh McEnany’s account — but that hasn’t stopped Trump himself or Faux News from diving deep into this fever swamp.
So the bottom line, the big reveal, is that Hunter Biden supposedly talked about setting up a meeting with his dad for a Ukranian who worked for Burisma that Joe Biden denies he met with. Uh, yeah, ok. This doesn’t prove that the meeting happened. It’s not recorded on Biden’s official schedule and there’s no reason not to include it, if it happen at all. Also the guy he supposedly met with says the meeting was with Kurt Volker.
Just as a point of fact Hunter Biden is a Harvard educated lawyer, who was the representative for Burisma while he worked for David Bois law firm. He went from being their lawyer to being on their board where he advised them on complying with U.S. laws.
If there’s something wrong with this we need to seriously question the $82 million that Jared and Ivanka have been earning while working in the White House.
Financial disclosure forms released Monday show that Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner made at least $82 million last year from multiple streams of outside income while they were senior White House advisers, according to the Washington Post.
Despite public scrutiny of their finances amid questions of conflicts of interest, a spokesman for the couple's lawyer said Trump and Kushner have followed the rules.
Oh, so when it’s Jared and Ivanka they “followed the rules” — although the rules say you can’t work in the White House while having financial conflicts of interest — but somehow Hunter Biden did something wrong? Even if the Burisma guy did meet with Joe Biden, so fucking what? How exactly does this work? Are the kids “off limits” or are they not?
There’s also the likelihood that this entire story was planted by a foreign intelligence agency.
On Thursday, NBC News reported that federal officials have opened an investigation into the origin of the New York Post report from earlier in the week making allegations about Joe Biden’s son and Ukraine.
“Federal investigators are examining whether the emails allegedly describing activities by Joe Biden and his son Hunter and found on a laptop at a Delaware repair shop are linked to a foreign intelligence operation, two people familiar with the matter told NBC News,” reported Ken Dilanian. “The Post, a conservative tabloid, has published a series of stories based on emails the newspaper said it obtained from President Donald Trump’s attorney, Rudy Giuliani. The first story highlighted what it called a ‘smoking gun email’ that suggested a meeting between Vice President Biden and a representative of a Ukrainian company that once paid Hunter Biden. The Biden campaign says there is no evidence the meeting happened, and the story was greeted with widespread skepticism.”
This is a bit like the story where Michael Cohen met with Russia hackers in Prague, except that didn’t happen because it was apparently a different Michael Cohen.
Even Giuliani himself may have finally come to the realization that his Ukrainian contact on these stories, Andrii Derkach, is a Russian Intelligence operative. Then he went on an anti-semitic rant about George Soros.
On Saturday, The Daily Beast reported that President Donald Trump’s former attorney Rudy Giuliani called their office following the latest, controversial story that he was given emails supposedly showing Hunter Biden’s attempts to connect Ukrainian businessmen to his father.
During the interview, Giuliani confessed that there was a chance that his repeated go-to source for dirt on the Bidens in Ukraine might be a “Russian spy” — and claimed, in an anti-Semitic rant, that he was being set up by billionaire Jewish philanthropist George Soros.
Giuliani defended his connections to Andrii Derkach, a member of the Ukrainian parliament known for his pro-Russia sympathies and sanctioned by the Treasury Department for his potential election interference, saying that “The chance that Derkach is a Russian spy is no better than 50/50” — something he characterized with glass-is-half-full optimism.
“My guess is that George Soros is behind this counter-offensive … because he wants to create a socialist country,” said Giuliani. “He’d like to see us collapse and see us taken over by the international — whatever.” He added that the sanctions against Derkach are “an intelligence ploy to try to create problems for Trump — because Derkach could probably bury Obama,” even though the Derkach sanctions were issued by officials in Trump’s own Treasury.
Yeah, it was Soros. In the kitchen, with a candlestick.
The wrong-wings next big complaint is that Twitter and Facebook have blocked the story. Because of course they’ve blocked this bullshit.
If anything the story about the story being blocked is a bigger story than what’s actually in the post story itself. It’s like a snake eating it’s own tail. Senate Republicans have decided to subpoena the CEO of Twitter over the blocking of the Post story.
Senate Republicans said Thursday they will subpoena Twitter chief executive Jack Dorsey over the decision to block a news report critical of Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden.
“This is election interference and we’re 19 days out from an election,” Senator Ted Cruz said, a day after the social network blocked links to the article by the New York Post alleging corruption by Biden in Ukraine
Yeah, ok, that should be something. They’ll be able to hype to Post story during the hearing I guess, but i doubt it’ll get much traction.
Also there was more bad news for Trump’s attempts to flip the narrative this week: the “unmasking” investigation of the Obama administration ended with a pathetic whimper, not a bang.
During his Reality Check segment this Thursday, CNN’s John Avlon criticized President Trump in the wake the Washington Post’s report that said the Department of Justice’s “unmasking” probe of whether Obama-era officials illegally requested the names of individuals whose names were redacted in intelligence documents, ended without charges or even a public report.
“That’s because it was always B.S.,” Avlon said. “The fact[s] weren’t there.”
There may be some in Trump’s Qanon afflicted base who may care about this nonsense, but it’s actually become a bigger story that Trump wouldn’t denounce Qanon.
Repeatedly pressed about the group during an NBC town hall with “Today” Show anchor Savannah Guthrie, Trump again claimed he knows very little about the QAnon theory that places him at the center as savior fighting a cult of “deep state” Democrats running a satanic pedophile ring.
“Can you just once and for all state that this is not true and disavow QAnon in its entirety?” Guthrie asked.
“I know nothing about QAnon, I know very little,” Trump said, appearing to take a stance that he has repeatedly used in the past to suggest that if he doesn’t know something he can’t be held accountable.
He doesn't know a thing about them even though the FBI says they’re a domestic terrorism threat.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation believes conspiracy theories like QAnon and Pizzagate pose a domestic-terrorism threat, Yahoo News reports. A previously unpublished FBI bulletin from May 30 says that for the first time the agency is labelling “conspiracy theory-driven domestic extremists” as a growing threat. The report points to fringe conspiracy theories as being potentially harmful and having the potential to expand in the 2020 election cycle. “The FBI assesses these conspiracy theories very likely will emerge, spread, and evolve in the modern information marketplace, occasionally driving both groups and individual extremists to carry out criminal or violent acts,” the document says. In the report, the FBI specifically cites multiple cases of conspiracy-driven violence, including a California man found in possession of a bomb who referenced Pizzagate and the New World Order, as well as the Pittsburgh shooter who killed 11 people at the Tree of Life Synagogue and had posted anti-Semitic content on social media.
He doesn’t know about Pizzagate? He doesn’t know about the Tree of Life shooting? Fucking seriously?
He has a habit of doing this. He didn't know anything about David Duke, the former KKK leader who had endorsed him. Except back in 2000, he knew full well who David Duke was an renounced him.
REPUBLICAN FRONT-RUNNER Donald Trump this morning refused to reject former Ku Klux Klan Grand Wizard David Duke … two days after he disavowed him on the campaign trail and 16 years after he disavowed him on the op-ed page of The New York Times.
[...]
Duke was so well-known that Trump didn't feel the need to identify him in the oped, though he had several days earlier when issuing a statement withdrawing from the race: "The Reform Party now includes a Klansman, Mr. Duke, a neo-Nazi, Mr. Buchanan, and a communist, Ms. Fulani," he said then. "This is not company I wish to keep."
Right, and then he didn’t know who the Proud Boys were either when he told them to “Stand by.” And then a bunch of their cohorts plotted to kidnap the Governors of Michigan and Virginia.
The men accused of plotting to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer also discussed “taking out” Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam because of coronavirus lockdown orders, an FBI agent revealed Tuesday.
The disclosure by FBI Special Agent Richard Trask that Northam also was being eyed for possible kidnapping came at a bond hearing in federal court in Grand Rapids, Michigan, for three of the suspects.
Trask, who did not use Northam’s name during his testimony, said the idea of kidnapping Northam and Whitmer was raised at a meeting the men attended in June in Ohio with other members of anti-government groups.
Yeah, he doesn’t know about that — but he knows all about the “radical left” and antifa. When he ranted about the “good people on both sides" at Charlottesville he also questioned “What about the Alt-Left that came running around, swinging clubs?”
“What about the ‘alt-left’ that came charging at, as you say, the ‘alt-right’?” he asked. “Let me ask you this: What about the fact they came charging — that they came charging with clubs in their hands, swinging clubs? Do they have any problem? I think they do.”
Antifa, or anti-fascist activists, certainly used clubs and dyed liquids against the white supremacists, according to the New York Times reporters Sheryl Gay Stolberg and Hawes Spencer, who covered the violence in Charlottesville. Other counterprotesters included nonviolent clergy members.
But there is one stark difference between the violence on the two sides: The police said that James Alex Fields Jr. of Ohio drove his car into a crowd and killed at least one person, Heather Heyer. Mr. Fields was charged with second-degree murder.
Comparing Antifa to Mr. Fields’s act is like “comparing a propeller plane to a C-130 transport,” said Brian Levin, the director of the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at California State University, San Bernardino.
“Using the fact that some counterprotesters were, in fact, violent, creates a structural and moral false equivalency that is seriously undermining the legitimacy of this president,” Professor Levin said.
Antifa were defending themselves and the public from the violence being brought to them by the Neo-Nazis and Alt-Right. It was self-defense. Remove the Nazis and there is no violence.
He constantly knows nothing about right-wing threats and terrorism, but he’s just all over so-called “leftist” violence, ain’t he? I mean, it’s not like he doesn’t denounce people all the time, even people in his own party like Ben Sasse who had criticized him on a recording behind closed doors for “kissing the butt” of dictators and “flirting with white supremacists.”
President Donald Trump on Saturday took aim at Republican Sen. Ben Sasse (NE) appearing to lick his wounds amid a growing list of Party critics by suggesting that his latest detractor from within the Republican Party “doesn’t have what it takes to be great.”
“The least effective of our 53 Republican Senators, and a person who truly doesn’t have what it takes to be great, is Little Ben Sasse of Nebraska, a State which I have gladly done so much to help,” Trump tweeted early Saturday.
“Little Ben is a liability to the Republican Party, and an embarrassment to the Great State of Nebraska,” he added in a second venomous tweet about the GOP senator.
And yet he can’t say shit about David Duke, or the Alt-Right, or the Proud Boys, or Qanon. Shocker. It’s because Donald John Trump is a white supremacist, so says his former Trump company executive Barbara Res.
Res recalled a time nearly 40 years ago during the erection of Trump Tower on New York City’s Fifth Avenue when Trump mulled, “These politicians don’t know anything. Maybe I should run for president. Wouldn’t that be something?”
“The seeds of who he is today were planted back when I worked with him,” Res wrote in her book, “He was able to control others, through lies and exaggeration, with promises of money or jobs, through threats of lawsuits or exposure. He surrounded himself with yes-men, blamed others for his own failures, never took responsibility, and always stole credit. These tactics are still at work, just deployed at the highest levels of the U.S. government, with all the corruption and chaos that necessarily ensue.”
Res wrote that “bigotry and bias control Donald’s view of the world, even the so-called positive stereotypes, which are just as damaging, like saying the Japanese (whom he seems to despise) are smarter than Americans.”
When Trump saw a Black worker on a construction site, he yelled at Res to “get him off there right now … and don’t ever let that happen again. I don’t want people to think that Trump Tower is being built by Black people.”
Res recalled Trump berating her for their guests. “Barbara, I don’t want Black kids sitting in the lobby where people come to buy million-dollar apartments!”
Res said that Trump hired a German residential manager because he believed his heritage made him “especially clean and orderly,” and said on another occasion that he “can’t stand” the working people who make up his political base.
While all this is going on, mostly courtesy of Rudolph Giuliani, his daughter Caroline Rose Giuliani has come forward to blast the Trump administration and endorse Joe Biden in a Vanity Fair op-ed.
“To anyone who feels overwhelmed or apathetic about this election, there is nothing I relate to more than desperation to escape corrosive political discourse,” Caroline Rose Giuliani wrote. “As a child, I saw firsthand the kind of cruel, selfish politics that Donald Trump has now inflicted on our country. It made me want to run as far away from them as possible. But trust me when I tell you: Running away does not solve the problem. We have to stand and fight. The only way to end this nightmare is to vote. There is hope on the horizon, but we’ll only grasp it if we elect Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.”
She’s even said that she could be the “other” October surprise.
“Tell me about the decision to do this so publicly,” Maddow asked. “Obviously, you’ve had to grapple your whole life with what kind of public profile you want to have and the associations with your name both in your father’s own political career and now in his career associated with the president’s. How did you weigh that in terms of how much you wanted to put yourself out there versus what you felt like was the urgency of this message?”
“Yeah, I’ve spent a lot of my life running away from that connection, just because I wanted to build an identity of my own,” Giuliani replied. “But just looking around, seeing the crisis that our country is in for the last four years, it just felt like an urgent thing to do.”
“And I felt like because of the experiences that I’ve had in politics and how discouraged I’ve been by them my whole life, for personal reasons, that I could speak to those people who feel really overwhelmed about this election because of the toxic climate that Trump has created.,” she explained.
Kids these days.
Besides Caroline Giuliani, john Bolton, Miles Taylor, Olivia Troye, Stephanie Winston Wolcoff and Dr. Richard Bright all coming out to blast the Trump administration, now we also have Gen. John Kelly.
“The depths of his dishonesty is just astounding to me,” Kelly reportedly told friends. “The dishonesty, the transactional nature of every relationship, though it’s more pathetic than anything else. He is the most flawed person I have ever met in my life.”
That’s gotta sting.
