Fort Lauderdale, FL: Congressional District 22 poling location Coral Ridge shopping Mall.
Arrived at about 3pm Monday Oct. 19 left at about 4:30pm. Over all experience was good. Poll workers were in good spirits, and the floors were marked with swatches of green tape to help maintain social distancing.
The line varied in length but despite tripling back on itself along a long corridor the tail end of the line kept spilling out the door into the parking lot. Some people reported that in the morning people were leaving because of a light rain. When we arrived the line started indoors but shortly there after it was spilling outside again. Fortunately, we stood in air conditioned comfort.
The poll workers were quick to greet us and point out where to stand and to stand by the marked floor tape.
Before we went in a very nice woman standing by her pickup truck under a very large “Biden Flag” was handing out “cheat sheets” these are very helpful because a large number of down ticket (judicial) races are nonpartisan and therefor do not show party affiliation. Also we have ballot initiatives that are tricky because some times you have to vote no to vote yes.
So with cheat sheet it clears that up.
The process once we cleared the line. There were about 5 tables with propriety computer/scanner/printers and at the head of the line I waited for one to open up and was promptly called over with my driver license in hand (something they had made it clear you should do during the primaries but were not now so instructing). The woman poll worker scanned my license and printed out a receipt for me to sign with a pen taken from a box of pens that were individually wrapped in cellophane. Once that was done, she collected two ballot sheets made of heavy paper and placed the ballots in a large paper sleeve after tearing off the ends (I don’t know what for). And I was next directed to a long group of “snack tray” sized tables to darken the “bubbles” on the ballot. I didn’t have to wait there were plenty that were empty.
Because of the law here republicans are listed first (basically the governor’s party is listed first). The presidential choice was at the top of the first page with the final ballot initiative on the back of the second page. So two pages printed front and back. Once completed I again stood in a line (very short) to feed my pages into a propriety scanner which had a screen that showed progress and completion of the scan before I could feed in the second page. Finally next to the scanner there were “i voted early” stickers which I took one and left.
Back out in the parking lot another woman had arrived holding another Biden Flag and was also handing out cheat sheets. Across from her was a man holding a Trump flag (looking a bit faded?) but with no cheat sheets. Make of that what you will.
