Toby Overdorf is the FL GOP State House incumbent in HD 83. Toby has spent a lot of time trying to convince people that he is the best choice for our environment and that couldn’t be further from the truth. Now that he sees that our race is a toss up, he’s calling on the President for a life line by way of a ridiculous article. One of the reasons this race is so close is because people are starting to realize that my opponent’s rhetoric doesn’t match his actions. The truth is my opponent’s campaign is funded by big sugar and the phosphate industry. Is it any surprise that he is weak on the environment? I am not taking any money from big sugar, or the phosphate industry and I am committed to doing the hard work to protect the St. Lucie River and Florida’s environment.
Despite states of emergencies by the governor in 2016 and 2018 for toxic algal discharges, the Florida legislature has not had a hearing to determine why this happened. My opponent recently claimed environmental laws like best management practices are working. If that is true, why is Lake Okeechobee covered in massive algal blooms each summer? After all, algal blooms are the result of excess nutrients in the water body. The nutrients are coming from somewhere. My opponent relies on the recently passed Clean Waterways Act as some comprehensive legislative achievement to save Florida’s environment. Many environmental organizations were lukewarm on the bill, and some opposed the bill as bad policy. However, the industry group Associated Industries of Florida praised the bill. AIF’s PAC gets about half of its money from sugar. It is no wonder sugar companies invest in my opponent. He couldn’t even think of one amendment to improve the bill.
Bottom line is my GOP incumbent opponent is in trouble. My campaign presents a clear and present danger to his continuing grift opportunities. He’s calling for Trump’s help to defeat me. If elected, I will stand up for our environment. I will demand answers to questions about why these blooms are occurring. I will not take sugar or phosphate money. I will fight to protect our community from toxic algal with the same determination that drove me as a firefighter and Marine, but to combat my opponent’s corporate money I need your support.
