Now that we are so close to Election Day, one good question I’ve been getting asked a lot in my role as political director of Daily Kos is, “Where can my donations have the biggest impact?” Fortunately, there’s an excellent answer.
Races for state legislature never get the attention that, say, top-tier contests for the U.S. Senate enjoy, but they’re extremely important. If we can end Republican control of state governments, we can stop their agenda dead in its tracks, whether we’re talking about suppressing the vote, efforts to restrict reproductive rights, laws that deny climate change, attacks on LGBTQ people, and so much more. And with redistricting about to start next year, we can block GOP gerrymanders for the next decade.
What’s more, the total budgets for legislative campaigns are far smaller than for statewide races, so grassroots donations go a long way. If a candidate is hoping to spend $100,000, then the $10,000 that Daily Kos might collectively raise for them will have a huge impact—and your $10 will play a big part in that.
With so many races out there, of course, it can be hard to know which to choose, but we’re here to help. Last month, Daily Kos endorsed our biggest-ever slate of candidates, featuring 47 Democrats running to flip Republican-held seats in state legislatures we can win back from the GOP. Now, after consulting with folks on the ground, we’ve identified 17 campaigns on our original roster—from Arizona, Michigan, North Carolina, and Texas—that need the biggest boost during this stretch run.
We’re setting an overall goal of $150,000 for this set of candidates, and as you can see on the thermometer above, we’re about halfway there so far. Can you get us the rest of the way?
