As we progress into the final stretches of campaign season, it appears that growing levels of energy and momentum are now moving onto the side of biochemist Patrick Nelson (D) in his quest to unseat Daphne Jordan (R) in New York’s 43rd State Senate District. The 43rd District encompasses a competitive swath of the Upper Hudson Valley region that Donald Trump narrowly won in 2016, but where Democrats have a small advantage in party enrollment.
Just this week, Nelson picked up several major high-profile endorsements from state and regional Democratic Party leaders, including those of New York State Comptroller Tom Dinapoli, Congressman Antonio Delgado (D-Hudson Valley) and Congressman Paul Tonko (D-Capital District), as well as State Assemblywoman Didi Barrett (D-Columbia County). Many of these officials cited Nelson’s biochemistry background, as well as his commitment to reforming health care and support for the environment as reasons for their support.
Comptroller Dinapoli, in an enthusiastic message of support for Patrick Nelson states that he is now “excited to see what Patrick can accomplish on behalf of residents in the 43rd District” and that “he will deliver results in the State Senate, from making voting more accessible to pushing for progress on health care and the environment.”
From New York State Comptroller Tom Dinapoli:
“While he’s served as a local elected official, party leader, and campaign manager, Patrick has been on a mission to fight for working families in his community. I know Patrick will fight for a fiscally responsible government that works for the people while investing in local businesses. He will deliver results in the State Senate, from making voting more accessible to pushing for progress on health care and the environment. I’m excited to see what Patrick can accomplish on behalf of residents in the 43rd District in the State Senate.”
From Congressman Antonio Delgado:
“As we’re working to grow our economy back while protecting our communities from COVID-19, we need someone with both a scientific and business perspective to help guide state policy. Patrick Nelson brings that perspective to bear and will work to deliver results for the 43rd District.”
From Congressman Paul Tonko:
“I need a partner in the State Senate who can deliver results for our constituents — a partner like Patrick Nelson. As one of the few scientists and engineers in Congress, I know his biochemistry background is sorely needed in the New York legislature, especially on issues of climate change, health care, reopening our communities and the Covid-19 pandemic. I have no doubt he will be an excellent State Senator.”
From State Assemblywoman Didi Barrett:
“I need a Democratic partner in the NY State Senate to fight for renewable energy, a clean environment, family farms, local businesses and universal access to reliable broadband for Columbia County. I am happy to endorse Patrick Nelson in his run to represent the 43rd District.”
Daphne Jordan: An Increasingly Scared, Embattled & Vulnerable Incumbent...
There are growing signs that the incumbent, Republican State Senator Daphne Jordan, could now very well be swept out of office in what many polls are indicating may be a second “blue wave” election.
Just recently, Senator Jordan attracted certain levels of notoriety hen she was awarded the 2020 “Oil Slick Award” from the watchdog group, Environmental Advocates Action of New York, which sought to call attention to her notoriously poor voting record on environmental and public health issues. Furthermore, for months, Jordan has continually ignored requests from many of her constituents to publicly debate Patrick Nelson at least one time before the upcoming election, the obvious signs of an illusive, scared and vulnerable incumbent. All in all, Daphne Jordan is not attracting the type of publicity that any GOP incumbent would want right now, especially in a swing district with Donald Trump cratering in most recent national polls.
But what good may come out all of Daphne’s most recent campaign blunders is that we may soon gain one more voice for the environment, renewable energy and health care reform at the state capital in Albany.
