Republicans like to scare people about “defunding the police.”
Republicans like Greg Steube (FL-17) have actually voted to do it.
Steube’s opponent, Allen Ellison, has worked tirelessly in Florida and in Washington D.C. to benefit people and communities through business development, home ownership, entrepreneurship, and empowerment of Women.
Steube repeatedly votes to undermine the goals Allen has worked for all his life. Last year Steube voted against reauthorizing the Violence Against Women Act, which would fund hundreds of rape crisis centers and law enforcement trainings to help police and others respond to sexual assault and domestic violence. This means he also voted against measures to prevent stalking and cybercrime.
And that’s not the only anti-woman vote he has cast. Shortly before his vote against the Violence Against Women Act, he also voted against the Paycheck Fairness Act, which requires men and women to receive equal pay for equal work.
And shortly before that, he voted against establishing a Women’s History Museum in the Smithsonian.
But Greg Steube’s votes don’t only harm women. His most recent votes harm many people in his district and throughout Florida , On May 15 of this year, he voted against the Heroes Act, which his Republican friends in the Senate have blocked for nearly six months. What has that cost the people of the State?
- More than a million Floridians have lost their unemployment insurance since August 1, when the prior extension expired.
- An additional $1,200 stimulus check is blocked.
- Florida is losing almost $860,000,000 in aid to Florida public schools – or $302 per pupil[1]
- Florida’s share of $300,000,000 in law enforcement funds is blocked.
Again -- Republicans like to scare people about “defunding the police.” Greg Steube actually votes to do it.
