Barry Moore, Alabama’s former Republican representative who is now a GOP nominee to once again be a representative, has been making racist headlines for some time now. Before he reran for office, Moore’s career was once filled with bogus voter fraud legislation, harsh anti-immigration bills, draconian abortion laws, drug testing for welfare, homophobic discriminatory laws, and adaptation of old cruel forms of execution.* Also pro-confederacy laws.** And was arrested in 2014 for felony perjury in a big corruption case, where he told a grand jury one thing only to have audio recordings of him saying another thing appear.***
On Friday, Moore—possibly feeling the racist urges that have made him who he is—decided to try and figure out why polls are not favoring conservatives these days. Probably after washing his hands and taking off his mask and remembering there won’t be the the same kind of Thanksgiving or Christmas this year because of COVID-19 and how it’s totally not contained, Moore came up with a solution: Stop people of color from voting! In fact, it was so racist and bananas that Moore tweeted it out and less than 20 minutes later, decided to delete it.
The now-deleted tweet was directed at conservative Twitter figure Rogan O’Handley and explained exactly how MAGA-heads and other conservatives could win their elections: “Pass a law. No voting within 5 years of moving into the state. Or I [sic] higher tax bracket for 7 years once moving into the state. You have to do something to stop them.”
One of the great hilarities of it all is that Mr. O’Handley’s Twitter account has a pinned tweet all about the “silent majority” and how they “are taking back the country.” It sounds like conservatives seem to have mistaken the word “majority” for “minority” and authoritarianism for democracy.
This isn’t the first time Moore has had to delete one of his “ideas.” All the way back in August 2020, Moore deleted a meme that championed Kenosha, Wisconsin, shooter Kyle Rittenhouse as someone who “fought back.” So it is crystal clear what Barry Moore’s feelings are about who should have rights in our country and who should not have rights in our country. Unfortunately, Moore is running in a solidly red district and the Democratic nominee, Phyllis Harvey-Hall, a retired elementary school teacher, is running an uphill battle against a racist in a district that doesn’t mind racists.
