Douglas County, Missouri
October 9, 2020
It has been a busy week and as a result I missed my daily walk a couple of times and cut it short a couple more. When I finally got the chance to walk today it seemed that October has finally decided to get colorful. When that happens I sometimes stray off the beaten path and walk into the fields I normally walk past. Yes, I am a trespasser! But can you blame me?
The Daily Bucket is a nature refuge. We amicably discuss animals, weather, climate, soil, plants, waters and note life’s patterns.
We invite you to note what you are seeing around you in your own part of the world, and to share your observations in the comments below.
Each note is a record that we can refer to in the future as we try to understand the phenological patterns that are quietly unwinding around us. To have the Daily Bucket in your Activity Stream, visit Backyard Science’s profile page and click on Follow.

For most of the year, walking in these fields is an invitation to be attacked by biting insects. But when the weather cools down and the haying is done it becomes much safer to wander through. Nobody lives here anymore, so nobody really cares that I am here.
Panoramic view:
I wasn’t really planning to walk in the field, but it was a lovely day and the Fall Color is best seen when you look at the hillsides. The quickest way to get closer to these hillsides is to walk across the fields.
The rest of my time was spent on our county road, and during that time I even came across a few living creatures, such as this rough green snake:
He was not appreciative, but I moved him to the side of the road:
And this small box turtle. I think it’s a female — the eyes look brown to me:
I moved her off the road — she did not appreciate my thoughtfulness!
Then this stick insect:
And this wheel bug...I let him stay where he was:
When I heard honking above me I looked to the skies and saw geese flying overhead:
They weren’t the only birds I saw. There were perky little chickadees:
and this little warbler:
And this little Downy Woodpecker:
There were many wildflowers still growing, but the emerging fall color was the big focus today, so here are a few more of that type of photo:
“Two roads diverged in a wood, and I...”
“And that has made all the difference.”
