Today I was listening to the Ring Of Fire weekly podcast #566 (11 years?, wow). Link: Ring Of Fire #566 Day One Agenda Interview. David Dayen makes the absolutely mind clearing point that if Congress does NOTHING, due to the Senate, or internal issues, the President has a wide range of authority to execute and adjust existing laws and regulations. President Trump mangled the immigration rules, created farm subsidies, and stalled the Education department’s rules in four years. And he passed only one major bill over 4 years — tax reduction.
I think Mr. Biden can immediately reinterpret anti-trust enforcement, redirect the FCC, the Education department, and hell even point the IRS to change behavior and audit more. Doing what is possible without leaning on the excuse for lack of cooperation would make people feel that government is working. Hearing the news that there are 500 experts involved in his transition committees gives me some encouragement that this is possible.
I wish the words of Mel Brooks weren’t ringing in my head right now “it’s good to be the king”.
