America is moving on. Trump may have placed himself in Limbo, but the rest of us are more than happy to look ahead. And Biden is proceeding perfectly well (for now) with his transition.
Trump, after all, is not the only one who can establish new norms and break down old traditions. He can try and set new precedents for ignoring election results, and we can respond with new precedents for kicking such people in the ass (and out of the White House).
Numerous columnists really need to snap the #*#! out of it. One of the only reasons why trump continues to exert the influence he does is because far too many people let him far too deeply inside their heads. Just stop giving him such power. He’s the ultimate paper tiger, and he’ll be out of the White House quite soon. Stop worrying about what a threat he is (even after he’s been defeated!) and, to a large extent, he’ll stop being such a threat.
One such column I read yesterday, written by Andrew Sullivan, declares, seriously, that “Trump Is Winning.” Why? Something about how trump continues to erode our democracy.
But let’s be clear: rarely if ever have I seen the WINNING side declare defeat and the LOSING side declare victory as has been happening after this election. For god’s sake, snap out of it!
It’s a time for dancing in the streets. And the people doing just that, after Biden was declared the winner, have a much better take on our current situation than the columnists do.
Because the bed-wetters seriously need to chill. It’s quite possible, in fact, that trump ultimately winds up strengthening our democracy. Over the last four years he inspired a level of civic engagement I’ve never seen in my lifetime. And we actually could benefit from the supposed cracks in our system that he has pointed out. Knowing that they’re there means we can fix them. The House of Reps, in fact, has already passed several such measures.
Ultimately, just about the best response I’ve seen to trump’s post election antics is from Biden himself. And it mostly amounts to largely ignoring trump and treating him like the gnat he has ultimately proven to be. He’s a mosquito who proved a small inconvenience in the arc of American history. Treat him as such, and be done with it!
