U.S. Combat deaths in WWII were 291,557. Non-combat deaths were 113,843. U.S. Covid deaths as of this morning were 247,000, rising by about 800 per day. But that rise is increasing dramatically. We are likely to have over 300,000 U.S. Covid fatalities by Christmas.
I asked a young man in the supermarket to use his mask the other day. He told me to butt out. He wasn’t worried about the Biden virus. The store staff says their management urges them not to approach the maskless. It might lead to a confrontation.
I think a request to pull up a mask is warranted. I think pushing the request a little beyond the first negative request is also warranted.
I have made similar requests to individuals before. Just over half thank me and pull up their mask. A few get angry and ask who am I to ask anything of them.
I just saw the Jodi Doering tape. She is the nurse in South Dakota who says she has patients who are dying of Covid, who are gasping for air, and tell her that their is no Covid, so they can’t possibly have it. In fact they yell at her for wearing her mask.
Clearly, the Covid denial message is having a huge impact. My new tactic when faced with a maskless person in an indoor facility will be to ask a follow-up question when someone tells me they do not believe in the virus.
“Do you realize Covid will have killed as many Americans in ten months as died in combat in WWII in four years?” “Nearly 300,000 American soldiers died in combat protecting you and your freedom. Why can’t you find the courage within yourself to raise your mask an inch and show that your patriotism not dead.”
This won’t work, obviously, unless the media start using the WWII marker in their Covid reporting. I might convince one or so extra folk per week to pull up a mask, which is certainly not a large-scale success. But not all the confrontations should be put on the store staff.
On the other hand, somebody has to do it. If 40% of the population is ignoring the science and putting everyone at risk, the spread will get way worse before it gets better.
It has to start somewhere. Why not with me? Why not with Kossacks?
