Everywhere around the country, organizers, activists and volunteers are recuperating after a grueling campaign season. Everywhere? No, organizers, activists and volunteers in Georgia have to continue fighting in the campaign for the January 5 runoff elections. Some are even involved in another campaign — the December 1 runoff for local races.
This brings us to the Democrats in Athens-Clarke county. They got out the vote and delivered a 42 point victory, with a net of 21,602 votes for Joe Biden, more than his statewide margin of 12,670 votes. Now they are working hard to replicate the turnout for January 5, to make sure that Jon Ossoff and Reverend Raphael Warnock win their respective Senate races and ensure that MVP Kamala Harris will cast the deciding vote. Additionally, they are also locked in a tight DA race that will be decided on December 1. The DA for the Western Judicial Circuit is responsible for two counties, deeply blue Athens-Clarke and deeply red Oconee. Because of that, turnout in Athens-Clarke is the key for a Democratic win. Democrats are running a very strong candidate, Deborah Gonzalez, who would become the Latina DA in Georgia history. Take a look at what Stacey Abrams says about Deborah Gonzalez:
To deliver on both the December 1 and the January 5 runoff elections, Democrats created an ambitious project, the the Athens Progressive Canvassing Corps, or APCC.
The APCC, a project of the Athens-Clarke County Democrats, will train and recruit hundreds of local residents to knock on over 27,832 doors all across Athens. By following through with this project, we are delivering down-ballot Democratic victories in the upcoming elections while fostering organizing skills among residents who are underrepresented in politics and negatively impacted financially by the pandemic.
The cost of the APCC is $25,000. Unfortunately, fundraising has recently stalled at about 2/3 of that sum. That is why I urge you:
Let’s do a MONEYBOMB for the Athens Progressive Canvassing Corps. Let’s make sure that Democrats in Athens-Clarke can concentrate in getting out the vote for the DA race on December 1 and register voters before the December 7 deadline for the Senate races. Let’s make sure that they don’t have to worry about further fundraising.
