I was reminded today that Wednesday would have been the 104th birthday of Walter Leland Cronkite Jr., the long-time anchor of the CBS Evening News, and the man of whom President Lyndon B. Johnson is said to have remarked, after Cronkite editorialized about the Vietnam War, "If I've lost Cronkite, I've lost Middle America."
I am reminded that during the 1968 Democratic National Convention, violence erupted outside the convention hall, and Dan Rather was punched to the floor (on camera) by security personnel. Cronkite commented, "I think we've got a bunch of thugs here, Dan."
I’m sure he would be saying the same thing about the current Republican party, were he still alive.
