I hope this finds all of you well and not delirious from cabin fever.
We did it! Specifically, we, in Pennsylvania, succeeded in pushing Biden/Harris past 270 electoral votes to become the next President/Vice President on Jan. 20, 2021!!
Yes, at last, the whiner-in-chief, will be leaving office one way or another. What a relief!!!
The next thing is to secure the Senate. Right now, there are 48 Republicans and 48 Democrats assured seats in the Senate. The outstanding four Senate races are one in Alaska, one in North Carolina, and two in Georgia. At the moment, Alaska and North Carolina look as if they will eventually elect Republican Senators. That will make the count 50-48 Republicans. VP elect Kamala Harris will be presiding over the Senate and will be able to vote when there is a tie.
If the Republicans continue to have the majority in the Senate, Mitch McConnell remains the majority leader. Nothing will get done. Cabinet appointees will not be confirmed, much needed legislation will not get passed, judges will not get appointed.
If we can secure both Georgia Senators on the Democratic side of the aisle, however, there will be a 50-50 split and Harris' tie-breaking vote will make the tally 51-50 Democrats. Democrats will, then, end the filibuster and choose a Majority Leader, who will decide what gets voted on and what is not. Cabinet appointees will get confirmed, legislation will get passed, judges get appointed. Perhaps we will get something, anything done to address climate change and affordable health care.
Both Georgia Senate races will have runoff elections on Jan. 5. With all the votes cast so far in the liberal and the conservative columns, Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock are each within 100,000 votes of victory. I am hoping that many Republicans who voted for Trump will not show up at the polls since their Presidential candidate isn’t on the ballot, but that won't be enough.
I am election weary. I am pretty sure all of you are too. If I sit down, now, I may not get back up.
"On the plains of hesitation lie the blackened bones of countless millions who, at the dawn of victory lay down to rest, and resting they died. "
Adlai Stevenson
If we want more than another 4 years of stalemate in the U.S. Government, we must work diligently to get more Democrats to vote on Jan. 5, than Republicans.
If we hesitate, the hope of getting anything done in the next 4 years will die.
We must get back in the trenches... one more time. If you contributed to 2020 candidates, please step up again and contribute to Jon Ossoff , Raphael Warnock or the DSCC (Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee). If you made phone calls, make more for Georgia. If you were in a texting tree, warm up your thumbs and get back at it.
I'll meet you at the barbed wire.
