Disgust with Donald Trump’s attempts to overturn the election and GOP leadership’s acquiescence in damaging American democracy has led to one member saying, “Enough”. Paul Mitchell of Michigan, a retiring member of the US House, has resigned from the Republican Party.
In an exclusive interview, Rep. Paul Mitchell, Republican of Michigan, told CNN that his disgust and disappointment with President Donald Trump's efforts to overturn the results of the election have led him to request that the Clerk of the House change his party affiliation to "independent," and to notify GOP leaders in a letter that he is withdrawing his "engagement and association with the Republican Party at both the national and state level."
Mitchell, who has voted with Trump about 95% of the time, represents Michigan’s 10th district. His leaving may mean little if no other Republicans follow him. Another Michigan congressman, Justin Amash left the Republican Party in July 2019 due to his disapproval of Trump’s actions.
About 126 current Republican US House members supported a bizarre attempt by the state of Texas to sue Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Georgia to stop them from casting their electoral votes for Joe Biden.
It appears Trump will continue his stranglehold on the party, even after he leaves office. This could create circumstances for an organized anti-Trump faction within or alongside the Republican Party. rather than just isolated opposition or occasional, guarded criticism.
