According to Valley News, a local newspaper near Dartmouth College, the menorah set up on the Green for the holidays was vandalized by shooting out the lamps, possibly with a pellet gun.
Dartmouth President reported menorah vandalized - In a letter to the Dartmouth College community on Thursday, President Phil Hanlon reported that seven of the nine lights on the menorah set up on the Green for the holiday season were shot out with what appears to have been a pellet gun.
Though my beloved and I serve two small PCUSA churches, we take note of the Maccabean story of the miraculous sustaining of light in what was a dark time. The photo I attached at the top of this diary was taken in our living room last night, after my beloved lit the candles for the seventh night, and we recited the blessings.
Well, there are still those who apparently object to the light. Maybe an adolescent prank; maybe a despicable threat to the Jewish community even in what’s a pretty blue area.
Tonight’s the last evening of candle-lighting .. let’s join in the continuing celebration of light, light, more light despite the sometimes encircling gloom.
