THE CRITIQUE: “Last time Bernie got 60% of the vote in New Hampshire — this time only 26%. And this time in Iowa he got just 25% of the vote. He’s nowhere near as popular as before!“
Since this critique pops up so often, here’s my yummy analogy:
If a scoop shop serves lots of good flavors, the top choices — chocolate and vanilla — may each only account for around 25% of sales. Of course that doesn’t mean 75% of folks don’t like chocolate and 75% don’t like vanilla — it only means there are additional attractive choices.
If a vendor is just serving chocolate and vanilla cones, each would account for much higher than 25% of the sales.
2016 Customer: What are your choices? “Chocolate and vanilla.” Ooh, I love chocolate!
2020 Customer: What are your choices? “There’s a big list on the wall.” Ooh, I love chocolate….but I am really intrigued by that mocha chocolate chip!
“Would you like a scoop of each?”
Yes please, with whipped cream and a cherry on top!
