Let me start off by saying that I am on team Warren (as a supporter), but this is not an argument for her candidacy. My Mom doesn’t like her, she thinks Warren is too far to the left. That’s what this piece is about, how far is too far?
The Right’s St. Ron signed tax hikes and an amnesty bill for undocumented people living in America to become citizens. Prior to 2008 nearly all Americans agreed Climate Change was a problem- “Cap and Trade” was a Republican proposal until Sarah Palin dubbed it “Cap and Tax”. Ted Kennedy was working with Nixon on a Proposal to ensure ALL Americans had access to affordable Health Care. This is the same Nixon who signed the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, and established the EPA.
Not a single Republican voted for President Clinton’s economic bill that raised the top marginal tax rate to 39.6% in 1993. ObamaCare, which is RomneyCare was the Republican response to HillaryCare. Ed Shultz usedto show what he called the Vulture chart. It showed the difference between economic growth and wage growth andclearly demonstrated that the two lines matched up well until 1980 when they diverged dramatically.
The top marginal tax rate was 70%. We had a thing called Superfund which was a tax on businesses that dealt in toxic substances to pay for the cleanup of those sites. After the second Oil Embargo, we passed a law to increase fuel economy on vehicles to 40 MPG on a gradual pace, but with crude at $11 a Barrel Reagan stopped it.
The Right likes to remind us that Columbine happened while the Assault Weapons Ban was in effect, but can they name other mass shootings during that time? In 2004, President Bush said that he would sign a bill to renew it IF one reached his desk, but he never called for Congress (which Republicans controlled) to send him one.
I’m Jewish. My ancestors spent 40 years in the desert. Higher taxes, immigration reform, healing the environment, gun safety, economic equality ALL had BROAD BIPARTISAN SUPPORT. It has been 40 years, it’s time to get to the Promised Land.
