Long before we knew the two old white guys who would be the last persons standing I have hoped that Democrats can get together on a consensus agenda.
The simple fact is, we agree on a lot more than we don’t. I didn’t want either wing of the party to win and impose their will on the other, but to negotiate with each other to find a path where each side got enough of what it wanted to be enthusiastic partners. All of the agenda should have support of at least 60% of the public so we can bill it as “The People’s Agenda” or some catchier name and force Republicans to explain why they are against things like a public option, gun control, climate and environmental protection and maybe even a wealth tax that have super-majority support. It would still be an awesomely progressive agenda.
I know that Bernie and his supporters — and a lot of Warren supporters (that’s who I voted for) — will have to swallow hard and compromise in order to get onboard. I suspect that most will. But those of us who are not currently with Bernie have to be prepared to reach out with good will to our sisters and brothers right next door in a large and important faction of our party.
With that in mind, I hope that those on this site, including (especially?) the guy whose name is in the masthead, will work toward that end. So to that gentleman to whom I obliquely referred… is saying you were right or slamming Bernie and his supporters more important than the stated goal of this site to elect more and better Democrats? Can you be generous to your fellow Democrats with whom you have disagreed?
Let’s all be part of the healing and head confidently into electoral battle together to take back this country with a blue wave so wide, deep and tall that it washes away Trumpism forever and a day!
