I know we’re all tired of hearing about coronavirus, COVID-19, toilet paper hoarding, flattening the curve, and all of it. And yet here we are, in the new normal — Life During Pandemic. Go wash your hands, then grab a beverage (single-serving cans/bottles only!) and join me below the story break for a snapshot of life at Casa Brillig today...
Here at Top Comments we welcome longtime as well as brand new Daily Kos readers to join us at 10pm Eastern. We strive to nourish community by rounding up some of the site's best, funniest, most mojo'd & most informative commentary, and we depend on your help!! If you see a comment by another Kossack that deserves wider recognition, please send it either to topcomments at gmail or to the Top Comments group mailbox by 9:30pm Eastern. Please please please include a few words about why you sent it in as well as your user name (even if you think we know it already :-)), so we can credit you with the find!
There are four of us at Casa Brillig right now: Mr. Brillig, whose workplace is on remote-only for the foreseeable future; K2, whose school is as of 6pm tonight closed not until March 27 as originally announced by our district but *at least* until April 7th because of statewide action; K1, who is home from her university and we’re not quite sure how long she will be here for; and yours truly.
I was up this morning to make the blessed coffee — I’ve been having butter coffee most mornings and absolutely love it — and then watch our very first worship service in our new church-via-Zoom format. The photo up top is a cropped-for-privacy view of how it went. We are trying hard to stay in community, and have an entire schedule of drop-in virtual lunches, chat groups, and worship opportunities scheduled.
Around lunchtime, Mr. Brillig, K1 and I decided to walk the dog to our local grocery store and see if we could find some fresh fruit. Unlike yesterday when the shelves were bare, we came away with grapes, strawberries, mangoes, and some delicious brussels sprouts. More on those sprouts later :). We had a lovely walk and saw lots of people out, but no one getting too close together. In the store, people were mindful of not crowding others.
Midday, I went into my virtual world of Second Life to be oriented on a new role as a Mentor for folks just entering SL for the first time. Yes, mentoring there is a valuable way to help the community, as there’s a learning curve there even steeper than figuring out DailyKos culture! There are many people realizing that SL affords the opportunity for people to interact ‘in person’, but not. Years ago it was a place where businesses and schools had a presence; just maybe, we’ll see a renaissance. Even if not, it’s where I enjoy live music every hour of the day.
Spent the rest of the afternoon watching a facebook live piano recital by our church pianist while cooking an Actual Meal that we never have time to do in Traditional Times… a roast beef, fried watermelon radishes, roasted brussels sprouts and salt fingerling potatoes. Yes, it was as delicious as it sounds!
K1 and I are watching the debate as I type, and while this is Not A Normal Day… we made it work. It’s not always gonna be this easy, but for today… it was a good day and I am committed to finding something to be grateful for every day.
How did YOUR day go? What’s changing, and what’s staying the same for you? How are you holding up?
TOP COMMENTS
Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down. Please remember that comment inclusion in Top Comments does not constitute support or endorsement by diarist, formatter, Top Comments writers or DailyKos. Questions, complaints or comments? We had no comment nominations submitted directly. I KNOW y’all who are working remotely can visit the site more often and please, we NEED your noms!
We had one highlight, also known as an opportunity to share with others how to nominate comments directly!
Highlighted by Amaze is this comment by FLwolverine, from annieli’s diary Typhoid (or Not) Trump's presser today where he admits his COVID-19 delay was about the money.
