The DOW has plunged to levels below when Trump took the oath of office. As many as 3 million Americans may have lost their jobs in the last month ruining Trump’s unemployment numbers. Millions more have been asked to “shelter in place” and “stay at home” unless they possess ‘essential" jobs. Over 15,000 people have tested positive for CoronaVirus with over 200 deaths in the U.S. and 10,000 deaths worldwide.
Trump insists this is “nobodies fault.” Except for China, and that’s not racist at all.
And while all this is going on the Fox faithful continue to wander the wilderness of conspiracy and delusion to their detriment and devastation.
As noted by Alternet.
President Donald Trump and many of his sycophants — including those at Fox News — have dramatically changed their tone when it comes to the coronavirus pandemic. After weeks of claiming that the mainstream media were exaggerating the dangers of coronavirus, Trump has adopted a somber tone and now acknowledges how deadly it is. But the fact remains that for far too long, many Trumpistas and Republicans claimed that coronavirus wasn’t nearly as dangerous as liberals, progressives, Democrats, centrists, Never Trump conservatives and the mainstream media were making it out to be. And those Trumpistas and Republicans — by encouraging complacency in the face of a deadly pandemic — now have blood on their hands.
Previously, Trump claimed that coronavirus warnings from the mainstream media and Democrats were a “hoax.” But unsettling figures from the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland say otherwise. As of early Friday morning, March 20, the COVID-19 strain of coronavirus has killed 10,038 people worldwide — including 3405 in Italy alone. Italy, in fact, has now passed Mainland China in the COVID-19 death count. Other countries being ravaged by coronavirus range from Iran (with 1284 deaths) to Spain (833 deaths). But those numbers are likely to increase substantially in the weeks ahead.
They initially ignored the virus. They called it a "Democrat hoax.” They said “no one could have predicted...” but this was very clearly and directly predicted starting with Susan Rice who had warned Michael Flynn about the danger of a global pandemic during the transition in 2016.
“You know, I can’t tell you whether his cabinet officials and his national security adviser designee and his homeland security adviser designee briefed (Trump) on what they exercised the scenario around,” said Rice. “I have no ability to know what was discussed. I can tell you as national security adviser I had one of the only extended opportunities to do a handoff to my successor, who was at the time Gen. Michael Flynn. We spent 12 hours together during that transition period. We provided over 100 briefing papers, they were very carefully done, and the pandemic concern, the pandemic scenario, the global health agenda was very much one of the issues that we’ve presented and flagged for them.”
Of course, Obama had told Trump not to hire Flynn in the first place, so you can imagine how well they listened to Rice. Last year, the Trump administration ran an exercise to examine their ability to respond to a pandemic that found they were woefully lacking.
A simulation exercise run last year by an appointee of President Donald Trump found alarming gaps in the federal government’s ability to respond to a global pandemic — which the coronavirus has exploited to spread exponentially.
The “Crimson Contagion” exercise overseen by an assistant secretary at the Department of Health and Human Services from January to August 2019 found that participating states and agencies were plagued by confusion and infighting as they responded to an imaginary pandemic much like the one now spreading across the world, reported the New York Times.
“Exercise participants lacked clarity on federal interagency partners’ roles and responsibilities during an influenza pandemic response,” states the 63-page report issued in October.
[...]
The exercise found bureaucratic chaos trying to address a shortage of antiviral medications, personal protective equipment and ventilators — another scenario playing out now — and the HHS and the Federal Emergency Management Agency stepped on one another’s toes, just as they’ve been doing in recent weeks.
These people don't listen, these people don't learn — they just project their on fantasmalist visions onto everything and everyone. Predictably this leads, again and again, to the same results.
“It’s tempting to say that now is not the time for partisan recrimination,” writes Jamelle Bouie in “Don’t Let Trump Off the Hook.”
“But this is the second consecutive Republican administration to lead the United States to disaster. The difference is that it took George W. Bush most of his two terms to bring the country to the brink of economic collapse — Trump has done it in less than four years. He’s even hit some of the same milestones; Bush let Hurricane Katrina drown New Orleans, Trump let Hurricane Maria destroy Puerto Rico.”
[...]
“The public needs to know that the Republican Party is culpable for the present crisis, just as it was culpable for the Great Recession,” Bouie adds.
Historian John M. Barry points out how Trump’s mistakes with CoronaVirus repeat those made in 1918 during the Spanish Flu which, incidentally, killed Trump’s grandfather Frederick.
“There’s no question whatsoever that it cost us,” Barry said. “And the bizarre thing is that it was always in Trump’s self-interest to be candid. There’s no doubt he was being told the cold, hard truth about the situation behind closed doors. But he minimized it publicly, and that cost us in ways we can’t really quantify yet.”
“Well, in 1918, you couldn’t really say there was a collective response,” he replied. “It varied so much from city to city. But, look, we had people here essentially saying this virus was a Democratic plot to undermine the presidency. Nobody’s saying that now, of course. But it remains an open question whether we will collectively meet this challenge. We’re only at the beginning of this thing.”
“We’ve botched the early testing, and it’s not clear the public has responded seriously enough to the calls for social distancing. But things are changing quickly.”
While all this is going on, the DOJ also just quietly dropped the Mueller case against the Russian Troll farm and Concord Management claiming that continuing to pursue the case presented a security risk. Like, wouldn't they have known that before they issued the indictments in the first place?
Ahead of an April 1 trial start date in the Justice Department’s case against Russia’s election-meddling internet trolls, prosecutors sought to dismiss the case against the company that had shown up in court to fight the charges.
In a court filing Monday evening, prosecutors cited the company’s “eager and aggressive” efforts to use the judicial system “to gather information about how the United States detects and prevents foreign election interference.”
“[T]he government must weigh the benefits of securing a guilty verdict against the costs of presenting the case at trial, including the potential harms of exposing information and sensitive techniques of great importance to law enforcement, the intelligence community, or both,” the DOJ’s request for dismissal said.
[...]
When special counsel Robert Mueller unveiled the February 2018 grand jury indictment against Russian individuals and companies accused of using social media to tamper in the 2016 election, no one ever thought the case would go to trial.
But how that prediction finally came true Monday was not in the way that any legal observers foresaw. Concord Management — a company run by a Kremlin-aligned oligarch that Mueller charged with conspiracy to defraud the U.S. — made the unexpected move of hiring American lawyers who showed up in court to fight the charges.
[...]
The final straw for prosecutors was when the company in recent weeks appeared to blow off a court-approved trial subpoena, by allegedly withholding relevant documents the government says it knows Concord possessed.
“In short, Concord has demonstrated its intent to reap the benefits of the Court’s jurisdiction while positioning itself to evade any real obligations or responsibility,” prosecutors said Monday.
So suddenly the case which has been in process for 2 years, just weeks from going to trial, is now kaput. Poof. Me thinks there is something fishy here in the vicinity of Bill Barr, but that remains to be proven.
We’re in the middle of this ridiculous roller-coaster ride for the time being. Best to hang on tight.
