I vacillate between disbelief and dejection over how the Coronavirus is going to hit our country like a ton of bricks. I am preemptively crying for people I know are going to die while at the same time telling those same people that I can’t help them like I always have because the aren’t taking the same precautions I am. Because if I don’t draw that line, I might die.
Fuck this.
We are the richest and most powerful nation on Earth. We are the richest and most powerful nation in the history of history. We are the myth makers and the myth believers. We are the original ‘of the people’. So let’s live up to the myth. Let’s be the home of the brave. Just like the Americans who came before us.
We no longer have Federal leadership we can count on to shelter us from the worst. It is, literally, on us to survive. And the people who will suffer if we fail is us.
And there is a lot we can do, even in social distancing reality.
Each state needs a volunteer central.
- To sew supplies for medical workers.
- To support the people who keep our lives functioning in a period of dystopian dysfunction.
- To deliver groceries (and support the people stocking shelves).
- To support the needs of those out of work.
- To pressure businesses to retool to support the effort to save our blighted yet mythic nation.
Where are you and what can you do?
Lets get this going.
I’m in NC. Tonight I started thinking forward. Tomorrow I start making calls. I have a sewing machine. I have friends who have businesses, including restaurants, shuttered. I have a plague about to explode like a bomb in my vicinity. I have a state government I’m not altogether thrilled with.
We can’t defeat a virus but we can come together to survive.
We are Americans. Let’s do this.
